whole Prey!

I'm going to agree with Dr Mac talking about killing a Rabbit with the Broomstick Method is offensive. I catch bees, moths and any other bug that crawls or flies into my screened room and release it. I could never kill anything.

I'll be sure to stay away from threads like these from now on, this is not what I joined the forum for. I think these discussions belong on a forum all to themselves. Just my opinion.

You should sit down and think about this.

So I decided my dogs need a rabbit, this killing of animals isn't like your killing of a bug or whatnot as this is about survival, total different ballgame. I raise bunnies up, give them plenty of room to roam, they're happy, loved, held, given filtered water, organic foods and lives a good life. Then the day comes when it's time for bunny to become food for my dog, yeah, it's sad but it's what the purpose was from the start. So we take said bunny out and kill bunny the most humane, quickest way possible, bunny is dead within split second.

Here's your scenario: You decided you want to give your dog a treat for their birthday. You decide a rabbit would be a good treat. You go to the Asian supermarket, or whatever and buy your pup a rabbit. The rabbit has no fur and doesn't resemble a rabbit too much so you don't feel too bad about it. Your rabbit lived in a cage it's whole life and never got to experience sunlight, roaming, clean water, proper nutrition and was most likely killed by a slow, painful way.

How am I the bad guy again?

Next one up: I want to eat some chicken. I go down the street to the person raising chickens. I see the chickens roaming around, eating bugs, looking beautiful, clean filtered water around for them, happy and healthy. Said neighbor has some she's killed from the night before. I get my chicken and leave.

Your scenario: You want chicken. You go to the store and most likely get some Tyson chicken, maybe Pilgrims Pride. Your chicken never saw daylight, had his beak cut off, stood in their own urine and feces, pumped up on antibiotics, fed genetically modified food, and suffered every day of its existence.

But again, it's wrong for me to openly discus raising an animal for food, to survive, and killing it in a humane way? Get real, people!

I understand that discussing killing animals is not a pleasent topic. But I do believe that it has been handled nicely here. No one enjoys killing an animal, but when you own a carnivore, and want to feed them naturally it is best to discuss the most humane methods.

Yes rabbits are cute and fluffy but they are also prey animals. They were put on this earth to provide nurishment to the meat eaters. I for one like to know that my rabbits are happy and healthy right to the end, they do not suffer, and are not afraid.

When people see a chicken foraging do they say oh look at that poor bug, it was eaten ALIVE by that mean chicken!! No they are happy to see it go, just because it is not cute! Cuteness does not change the fact of nature.

Mary, you should check out Rabbit Talk. http://rabbittalk.com/ They have lots of great information about raising rabbits for food, and there are people on there that do raise guinea pigs (for dog food) and mice, gerbils and hampsters for cat food. While it is a predomintly rabbit site people do talk about there other animals.

I have thought about this. I am not making you the bad guy. I just feel feeding raw is one thing but when you get into a discussion about how to kill the animals etc. it belongs on a Raw Forum not here. As I said just my opinion.

Nope don't buy Tyson Chicken.

Yeah, you're probably right! If they were my bunnies, I'd do the broomstick method and my chickens I'd do whatever was fastest. But, hey, I'm pretty sure it's CONSIDERABLY more humane than any treatment the animals in dog food (or even the store for that matter) have ever seen. I'm all about feeding and eating animals who saw daylight, had adequate living space, ate the proper diet, and were well-cared for... so that outweighs the maybe not as pleasant as it should be death. When you buy meat from the store or support the kibble industries (most of them, granted, not all) you're supporting some really evil practices. Horrendous acts of animal abuse.

In the future, should I buy live animals, I'd kill them the quickest way. Not everybody has the guts to do that, though, so I am not angry with said company, I'm just thankful they gave them such a great life during the time they were here and that I have such healthy animals to feed my gang.

Completely uncalled for.

Only in American would someone click on a RAW FEEDING sub forum, click on the title of the thread called "whole prey" and then complain it discussed killing animals. Here's a hint, don't go to the raw section if you can't face animals dying. Do you realize that's what your doing? Do you all have a list of rules as far as what's okay to discuss on the raw forum? Because I would have for sure that talking about killing animals would be okay since that's what RAW is all about. FEEDING ANIMALS. Yes, my guys eat WHOLE animals. They're healthy, happy, and have the cleanest teeth around because they eat as nature intended. You know, the way you're supposed to feed living thing. Living things weren't meant to live on processed foods, you do know that right?!

There's nothing wrong with taking a stick and breaking an animal'l neck in order to kill them. Would you prefer I give the animal to my guys alive? I'm confused how the picture of them eating a bunny, tearing its head off, isn't offensive but then discussing the most humane way to kill an animal offensive. I'm going to continue to ignore these ignorant comments and would appreciate learning more as I'm purchasing some rabbits on CL next weekend. Luckily, I will have a mentor to talk me through the process. But after that, I'm on my own and my animals gotta eat :)

Nice! I'm going to try out guinea pig next time I make an order to my co-op. I went through the whole wanting to raise rabbits but when we moved into a 650 st ft apartment so had to put it on hold! We're moving into a house in January and plan to start back with chickens (not sure we'll eat those) and small things like rabbits/guinea pigs/mice (if I can get the cat to eat raw)

We're having a child next year and I look forward to teaching them about animals, how to properly care for them, how to respect them, and understanding while they're food, yes, but they still must be treated with respect at all times. No, they won't be attending in neck breaking events until older :) But they will know some animals are food as I don't plan to shelter them from this. If they have a problem when they're older with it, they can discontinue eating meat and not own a carnivore :)

I have really tried to stay out of this, but....remember, ancient humans ate raw whole prey, too. But of course, their life expectancy was around 25 years, or less. That is why I would never feed my domesticated dogs in such a way.

Wait, so now you're trying to have a debate in the raw section in regards to raw feeding? Domesticated doesn't equate to their digestive track changing. Can you show me any evidence of this? Please show me some evidence that proves dogs aren't carnivores and don't thrive off a diet exclusively of meat, bones, organs? Because if you looked at mine, you wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Vets are amazed with the condition of my pack. They can't seem to understand how they're teeth aren't rotting away when they haven't had a dental in two plus years.

Again, please don't even begin to try to argue with me in this section that your processed food is better than an animal getting their nutrients the proper way because you will never win that battle. Kibble rots animals teeth and in the long run leads to organ failure due to the strain it puts on them trying to digest things there weren't meant to eat. You clearly have no understanding of nutrition or also of sanitation as that's truly what has changed to allow humans to live so much longer. Not eating processed foods LOL to argue a processed, man-made food is better than what we're made to eat is downright laughable. Again, stay in your kibble section if you don't agree with raw.

I also want to add, I'm guess you've never researched people who follow the raw diet with respect to humans. They're some of the healthiest people around. People who eat real food, mostly in their raw state, aren't FAT. They don't have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart issues, etc because guess what? It's processed foods doing that. Do you understand what enzymes are? I'd suggest you do some research: http://www.getting-started-with-healthy-eating.com/what-are-enzymes.html

I've read hundreds of accounts from someone suffering from one of the many, many things we suffer from these days and almost ALWAYS are the symptoms reversed when clients are put on a mostly raw, organic diet containing real foods, nothing processed or GMO. Yeah, so clearly, nutrition isn't your thing because you really made an uninformed, ignorant comment. I drink raw milk, eat butter oil, raw liver, raw cheese, fermented cod liver, sprouted beans, raw honey, raw kefir, raw whey, raw free-range eggs EVERY DAY and I'm willing to be I'm skinnier and healthier than you. I'm 27, 100lbs and look about 20. So tell me again how it's not healthy? I've never been to the doctor since I got with my partner (7 yrs ago)and I haven't been sick in over five years. Can you say the same? You do realize there are multiple cultures around the world who follow the Weston Price way of eating (which is what I described I eat) and have never had a cavity, but never brushed their teeth. They're living to be 100+ also eating RAW products. Seriously, research the healthiest, longest living cultures and you'll find the eat very similar to the way I do. They never have fertility issues, never overweight, never use pharmaceuticals. Read some of the studies on these cultures done by Price and what happened when they introduced processed foods to them.

I'm going to have to step in here. First, this thread is in the raw section. If anything about raw food makes anyone uncomfortable, then I recommend you avoid threads in this category.

Mary, your last post is snippy, inappropriate and not productive. If posts cannot remain respectful, I will lock this thread.

No, it's not offensive to discuss ethical ways of killing animals. If you eat animals, or own an animal who requires them, then killing of animals has to take place. So it's good to learn the proper way to kill the animal in a way that causes the animal the least amount of pain.

While I personally don't enjoy reading about killing animals, this conversation is in the appropriate section. If members don't want to read about feeding raw, don't read that section. However, this forum will not be a place to learn about how to "dispatch prey". There are plenty of other places on the internet to learn about how to do that.

Many of you have PM'd the moderators and myself regarding this thread. As we pointed out earlier in the year, we now have a working infraction system. Today, this system worked exactly the way it was designed.

Infractions are automatically issued over a series of incidents, so a person who detracts from the community spirit and accumulates too many unheeded warnings will be banned long-term.
