FYI: death from carbon dioxide poisoning is not pleasant. It is suffocation, and the animal is very aware. When people kill themselves by running the car in the garage, it is carbon monoxide poisoning, and they, as you say, simply doze off. Many people die each year when their furnace malfunctions and produces CO (Not CO2). They just never wake up. So, I don't think CO2 is a humane way to 'euthanize' animals.

Yeah, you're probably right! If they were my bunnies, I'd do the broomstick method and my chickens I'd do whatever was fastest. But, hey, I'm pretty sure it's CONSIDERABLY more humane than any treatment the animals in dog food (or even the store for that matter) have ever seen. I'm all about feeding and eating animals who saw daylight, had adequate living space, ate the proper diet, and were well-cared for... so that outweighs the maybe not as pleasant as it should be death. When you buy meat from the store or support the kibble industries (most of them, granted, not all) you're supporting some really evil practices. Horrendous acts of animal abuse.

In the future, should I buy live animals, I'd kill them the quickest way. Not everybody has the guts to do that, though, so I am not angry with said company, I'm just thankful they gave them such a great life during the time they were here and that I have such healthy animals to feed my gang.

Eh, I was a little grossed out at first but now, nothing grosses me out. I live in a 650 SQ FT apartment and still feed this way. It is what it is, I just clean up with vinegar and baking soda afterwards. They are so very healthy and the last few times we've been to the vet, they're just amazed by them. Perfect weight, perfect teeth, perfect stools, etc. It's pretty awesome :)

I will be sure to send any of my clients who are considering feeding raw here.
That way I won't have to answer questions like 'What's the best way to kill the guinea pigs before I let the dogs tear into the body?"
And, no, I am not ridiculing- that is exactly what this thread is discussing.

Darn, I wrote a reply and I guess it took a while since doing it while working, and it didn't save over when I had to log back in.

Any who, basically I said, this country is very disconnected from their food and that's the way the Government wants to keep it, so I'm not surprised it's "disturbing" for some to see a carnivorous animal eating an animal... with that being said, I learned after living in Fayetteville, AR around the Tyson Farms just how important it is to know where the animal you eat lived, how it lived, how it was cared for and what it ate while it lived. If you aren't knowledgeable on factory farming, I'd suggest you read up on it. Chickens don't see daylight, they're fed genetically modified round up ready corn, piled hundreds upon hundreds on top of each other, and I've SEEN this so I know it's not a lie. I sought out a feed lot with cows too and saw them in their individual stalls, no room to turn around, being forced to eat GMO corn, too. So in a decent world, we wouldn't have to worry about such things and be able to trust companies, but this day and age it's essential I am able to visit where the animal lived, see it's living conditions, see it's food, and with the dogs feed the animal whole so I can get the most bang for our buck since it's not cheap. Every time you buy meat from the store you're supporting these awful practices and the only way I know to work to end it on my part is not supporting it. I owe those chickens and cows and pigs the respect of not giving my money to a company that abused them their whole lives. I'm not a PETA person, but I believe ALL animals deserve the freedom to roam, graze, and be taken care of when alive. So, yeah, funny in the end that me, feeding my dog a bunny is disturbing but feeding a bag of who-knows-what kind of man-made ingredients, vitamins from China most likely, and who knows what kind of animal scraps, isn't. Our leaders sure have tricked us, haven't they!

And I think that would bother people.

Sure, 'city folks' and 'country folks' are different. Understood. Gun control laws for New York City shouldn't apply in rural Maine.
I've told this story before here - when I was a pre-vet student I was a teenager from Long Island working in dairy farms in far upstate New York.So the kids were raising bunnies for the 4H, and I asked their father what happened after the show to Flopsy and Mopsy? He said 'We kill them and eat them.' I was aghast and said 'How do you break that to the kids?' He smiled and said 'Wait and see.'
So the show came and went, and he said it was time to kill Flopsy and Mopsy. (He did not say 'Put to sleep', or 'Put down,' he said kill.)
And the two little 8 year olds screamed 'Do mine first Daddy! Do mine first!'
Its just a different world.
But I do think most here have a certain sensitivity to animals, particularly cute little furry ones, and personally I think the tone had gotten a little rough.

No, it's not offensive to discuss ethical ways of killing animals. If you eat animals, or own an animal who requires them, then killing of animals has to take place. So it's good to learn the proper way to kill the animal in a way that causes the animal the least amount of pain. After all, they are the one who is the short end of the stick(no pun intended), so we should take their feelings into consideration and the quickest way possible is the most ethical. Y
es, killing the animal isn't something that's fun or enjoyable, but it has to be done. It makes me feel almost ill, but it has to be done because my animals have to have meat. I personally feel I need meat, too, so sadly, animals die for us. I think there's a difference between jumping for joy to killing an animal to raising an animal ethically for food and ending it's life as peacefully as possible. Big difference. People have been killing animals since we've been here and the circle of life, while it seems somewhat cruel, it's inevitable. We should be focusing on getting back in touch with our food vs leaving it up so someone else because as you can tell, leaving it up to others isn't doing anyone any good.
 
Not all kibble are "bad". I feed Acana... and there meat sources range from cage free poultry, fresh wild caught fish, and pasture fed bison and cattle.

I couldn't stomach killing my own meat. :ick I can understand that it might be healthy, but I'm the one that tried to catch a mouse running loose at my work only yesterday... so it wouldn't be killed.

I totally agree there are some kibbles out there that have more trust worthy meat sources, with Acana being one. I feed my cat ZiwiPeak and trust them 100%.
 
I'm going to agree with Dr Mac talking about killing a Rabbit with the Broomstick Method is offensive. I catch bees, moths and any other bug that crawls or flies into my screened room and release it. I could never kill anything.

I'll be sure to stay away from threads like these from now on, this is not what I joined the forum for. I think these discussions belong on a forum all to themselves. Just my opinion.
