Wiley 9 months: Coat growth question?? I have pictures!

Hi everyone it's been a while since I posted on the forums about Wiley who was born June 3, 2015.

Anyways my question is simple - I'm wondering, based on my pictures, what you think Wiley's coat is going to end up being like? He was a normal fluffy puppy (and parents - especially dad and grandmother - have large thick coats) but I'm having some concerns his coat is looking rather flat and silky in some areas. He does have undercoat, especially on his hind end and I have noticed in the last month shedding of his undercoat everytime I brush him. There was no shedding up to 8 months old.

When he was a puppy (see picture album) his "mane" area had the longest coat but now around his neck is shortest? Is that the last area to come in? He still has some puppy fluff behind his ears as you might be able to see in the pictures that is WAY longer than anything in that area - can I expect the adult coat around his neck to match this length?

Took him a while to lose all his puppy coat so I know he isn't an early bloomer. Anyways let me know what you think and if you have any questions!

Scroll right or left for more pictures. The ones which age is not indicated are between 10 weeks (youngest) to 5 months (oldest) then you will see 8-9 month pics!

I'll also add in the side shot pictures on tables he has been brushed and therefore fluffed up a bit - I tried to include some natural unbrushed and fluffed shots outside.

Nine months is the typical age for most puppies to start blowing coat. You can expect several coat changes over the next year or more. Most Shelties don't have their final adult coats until between age 2 or even 3. So don't worry...just keep brushing and grooming; that will help the old coat to come out and stimulate the new coat growth. A warm bath will help shed out the old coat too.

He is a very handsome boy!

Wiley is absolutely beautiful, love his colours! I found with my guy Piper (born last April 5th) that his coat got super thick between 9 months until now (a year in just over two weeks) and the breeder said he'd probably start blowing his coat in June or July, depending on the weather. And then yes, like Ann said it'll be awhile before they have their adult coat.

He is so young - think he looks great and he has such a beautiful coat.

Just wait until he's about 1½ years and has set a full coat, then I think you get all the fur you can imagine :wink2:

We are not real fond of the Blue Merrill dogs of any bread but Wiley is beautiful.

I would trim the "Fuzz" around his ears in general.

Personally I don't think you have much to worry about, he is stunning.

Shelties get their coats at different rates. Spirit had a ton of coat as a baby, but now her coat is not as thick as I would have anticipated. Her breeder said to just give her more time, that some shelties don't get their full adult coats until they're 3-4 years old.
