Wish Maia luck tomorrow!

Thank you everyone for your support. But Maia did not do so well. In fact, out of four puppies entered in her class (there was supposed to be 6, but two did not show up), she came in last twice . I feel bad for her - not because she is sad because she came in fourth, but she had a very rough day. First, it was an outdoor show, and it rained the entire day. She does not like to be 'fluffed' and handled too much by strangers, and she was - groomer, handler and judge. She HATES being away from me, and I had to stay away otherwise she would not walk or do anything for the handler. She was so stressed, that she soiled herself in the kennel after the show! She has NEVER EVER done that, even as a puppy. She just shyed away after and hid under a table. My sister came to pick her up, as I had to stay and help with the rest of the specialty. She said that Maia, went on the floor of the car and slept for most of the ride home. She finally perked up a bit near the end of the ride. At home, she played for a few minutes with Chinook, and then went to sleep for the rest of the day. Poor girl. I feel horrible for her. Thank goodness I am not showing her at the rest of the dog show. I don't think she would make it through! I think lots of rest is in order for her now.

I had someone take pictures, so I will post them tomorrow hopefully.

Poor Maia, she missed her mommy.
Do you think that perhaps you will show her yourself next time? That way she won't be stressing out missing you.
I hear your pain clearly, the problem is not that she didn't win, its that she didn't have any fun with the event. A sheltie that is stressed will not show well, no matter how beautiful and well proportioned.

Give her a hug from our clan, we think that she is a beauty.

Poor Maia! She might be a dog who needs a bit more time before she's able to put up with all the demands of showing. I don't recall her exact age, but if she was in 9-12 month class, I wonder whether she might be going through a bit of adolescence still.

I'm sorry to hear that it didn't go so well. I'm sure it is one of those things that will just take some time. Maybe she needs to work with the handler more so that she is better adjusted when it is time to go in the ring. I guess I should ask, are you going to use the handler again? I hope Maia is doing well today. Give her a big hug from my girls. She still went and participated and that is a big step too!

Poor Maia! Shows can be big scary things for a puppy! Have you ever taken her to shows where she doesn't have the stress of actually being in the ring? Just let her go to look at products and meet other dogs?

I am sure she will do better each time! She just has to get used to it. You know how shelties tend to get all shy when they are confused or stressed. I think every sheltie has had days or moments like this.

I'm sorry it didn't go well. It was only the first time you've done this, so don't beat yourself up about it. The other people there have probably had numerous attempts under their belt. It sounds like she was horribly stressed out. :eek2: Are you going to try again? Things like that make me nervous, as I crack under pressure and can't handle stress very well. Was it an only sheltie show, or where there other dogs there as well? You probably said in your post but I forgot.

My mom was horribly upset when I got Smudge and she found out we couldn't show him. She thinks it's just walking a dog around in a circle. I should let her read your posts! I don't think she understands the amount of time people put into these types of things.

We are sorry to hear about your day. I am sure you will spend a lot of time cuddling, but maybe a good romp in a swamp is in order!

(Cleveland was definately an outdoorsman, his thought of stress relief was to spend the day getting as dirty as he pleased and then enjoyed the 3 hours it took me to clean him back up.)

Give the little girl a good ear scratching for us!

It can take a while for a dog to adjust to the atmosphere and noise at a show, Ania. Why don't you think about just taking Maia to as many shows as you can during the next few months, not to show, but just to hang out and watch. Most breeders do this with puppies...they bring them from a young age just to get them used to it before they ever show them. That might also help you gain some confidence to show her yourself. Since she is so attached to you, that would be the perfect pairing! She might show like a dream if you're on the other end of the leash. And if you go and watch, you'll learn from being there, and you won't have to hide!
