Yeast Ear Infection

Hi~My Sheltie, Sammie is 6 yrs old. She developed her first yeast infection in her right year. Yesterday, vet prescribed Mometavet once a day for 14 days. It was suggested I also use TrizUltra+Keto ear flush for maintenance. I go back for a recheck in 2 weeks.

I am wondering if other Sheltie moms (or dads) have used either Mometavet or the ear flush for ear yeast infection. I consider shelties to be a bit more delicate breed so I just want to be sure she could handle these.

FYI~I’ve been a reader of the Sheltie Forum since we got our pup in 2020. It has always been a great source of info.

Welcome to the Forums. I myself have not had an ear infection in any of my 8 lifetime Shelties, so no help there unfortunately. But surely someone here can give you some firsthand advice. Any idea how she got it? Does she swim or otherwise get her ears wet? Most of my time with ear infections as a vet tech it was Labs who went into the ocean a lot, or spaniels with really long heavy ears.

Sammi is definitely not a swimmer. Lots of snow/ice last couple weeks. She was scratching her right ear (worse than left). When I looked, it was very inflamed. Lots of buildup that I tried to remove. Decided to take her to vet. He ran a slides on both ears of the debris he removed and said it was a yeast infection.

I guess my concern is the Ketoconazole in the ear wash. Just to be sure it is safe for this specific breed. Vet felt it was. The antibiotic ear drops side effect is possible “temporary” hearing loss. So just wondering if anyone has used any of these products.

Does anyone do regular ear washes for cleaning? Do your shelties tolerate it okay? The vet said I should be doing it regularly especially when I see buildup. But I’ve not done it. Just wiping the interior of the ear before bath time (I put ear plugs and cotton inside her ears to keep water out which works well)

My oldest boy Piper had a yeast overgrowth about 6 months ago…I started to notice his hearing was going and took him into the vet.
Not exactly a yeast infection but could’ve been a precursor to one.
The vet put Piper on Surolan for 2 weeks and I was to clean both ears (he had too much wax in the other ear) every third day and he had his recheck 2 weeks after. All cleared up and he’s been good ever since.
The flushing of the ears with the cleaner while irritating to him did help to clean out the gunk.
6 months later and his hearing is back 100% although the Surolan made him totally deaf while he was on it. Took about 3 weeks once he was off it to fully be able to hear again.
They are not so delicate as they look😊
Hopefully the medicine clears the ear infection up quickly.

I feel your pain. My girl Misty suddenly started having yeast ear infections several months ago. I've always used prescription Mometamax for ear infections on my dogs which is what it sounds like your vet gave you. It's fabulous stuff, and has always worked for me in a day or two of using it. Until Misty. The ear infections kept coming back and then she got them in her other ear, so after numerous vet treatments we opted to try an elimination diet for allergies. That seems to be working, she hasn't had any since I put her on a limited ingredient protein.

My vet recommend Zymox Otic for everyday ear cleaning, available on Amazon. There are two kinds, the regular and Zymox Plus. I'd use the first one unless you're treating an infection. My vet recommends using it once a week and that seems to work for my dogs.
