Yogurt

Well dang! I never thought of that.

Poor Earnie is still battleing that bad ear issue that was diagnosed back when we got the hips looked at.He has such a problem with his ears. And the vet said it was one of the worst yeast infections he had seen in a long time.He said it was so deep,it was a wonder he had not lost his hearing, thats how bad the infection was.
We are on our second tube of medicine for his ear.Originally our vet said it would take upwards 8-10 weeks for it to show improvement, which it has,but it's still some infected.

Would one know if Trapps constant fixation to licking Earnies ears would be the reason why they are slow to heal? Every time we see them together,Trapp is licking Earnies ear.More so when we apply medicine.

I think I'm going to give this a whirl~ So just plain yogurt? Is there a brand better than another?

I used Stonyfield plain yogurt. I gave him it with every meal and along with the below homemade recipe, we kept the ear situation at bay.

I found that he stopped getting ear infections if I consisently used this recipe every time his ears got the slightest bit wet. If from a sprinkler, rain, a romp in the pond, bath, etc. Just a little bit of wetness would create an environment in his ears where the infection would go haywire.

I have a great homemade remedy for the ears, but I warn you it is a MESS. The stuff stains, so you have to be really careful when you put it in. It is called Gentian Ear Treatment and hear is the website with the ingredients:

I bought some fat-free unsweetened plain yogurt for Snickers because he likes something mixed in with his dry food. I was planning on rotating yogurt and yams.. my question is:

Is it ok to give him yogurt everyday with his food? (1-3 tablespoons). Will I run the risk of runny poos? Is dairy ok for everyday use? (in small amounts).

Yogurt can be great for dogs, but my vet warned me that some dogs, like people, can be lactose intolerant.

I'd try a teaspoon with one meal, then wait and see how he is. If no loose stools within 24 hrs. I'd try a tablespoon with each meal.

My favorite plain yogurt is Astro Bio Best Plain. The label states that it has almost no lactose in it and I LOVE the taste. I give it to my sheltie girl with I've had no problems and they love it.

Wow!

That is news to me. I was always told that there was not enough lactose present in live cultured yogurt to cause any ill effects. Most people that I know who are lactose intolerant are able to eat yogurt. The bacteria that makes the yogurt...yogurt...eats most of the lactose up.

But...if you vet warned you against yogurt, by all means follow that advise.

Most dogs are lactose intolerant. Humans are one of the few animals that continue to consume milk products after being weaned - this has possibly helped humans adapt to living in cooler climates with less sunshine (less vitD). Lactose intolerance is highest in populations from warmer climates and dairy food consumption highest in cool climates.

Yoghurt has almost no lactose as its broken down in production, similarly most fermented cheeses are also very low, as are many hard cheeses. Whey based cheeses (incl ricotta) are high in lactose so are a no-no for pets too.

I figure lactose intolerance in dogs is kind of like "gluten intolerant". It's not something they were designed to digest to begin with, so it's not really a problem.

My guys don't get yogurt, because if it ain't broke, don't fix it :) And honestly, when I do buy it for them, I forget, and it goes bad in the fridge, and that's just gross. The girls will get yogurt and cottage cheese after they deliver babies. I do feed whole eggs on occasion, they love them.

If you don't normally feed your dog yogurt, you might want to consider small doses if they have been on an antibiotics. People are encouraged to eat probiotic yogurt or take probiotics when they are on an antibiotic to keep the gastrointestinal tract working the way it should. It can sometimes months for the effects of an antibiotic to leave in people and these meds can cause a change in the system and diarrhea. Just a thought.

We are experiencing this right now with Lexi. She has been on an antibiotic now for almost 6 weeks (yay almost done!). It has messed with her system and she has been gassier and has had bouts of diarrhea. I have given her some yogurt (but oops ran out) and it seemed to help. I just started with a teaspoon and then worked up to a TBS.

I know that the raw eggs are good for Shelties(and other dogs as well) since it's a good source of protein. The breeder I got my Shelties from gave eggs to the mother while the puppies were still drinking milk from here. But I've never heard giving dogs the shells also, you might want to check with a vet about that to make sure it's safe or not.
