Hello, we have a problem. Our puppy is only in his play yard when we can't watch him but are home. Tonight we put him in his play yard while the family was having dinner because we couldn't keep an eye on him. I came out of the kitchen and found him sitting on the sofa (the play yard is beside the sofa). I put him back in and we watched carefully and sure enough he climbed out and jumped onto the sofa again. What can I do to keep him from climbing the sides of the play yard? Thanks in advance!
welcome to my world. Ruu has climbed out of his pen since he was 3 weeks in the whelping box. He then climbed out of the gate we had in the kitchen. Then he started jumping it. Needless to say, he never spent more than a minute in the kitchen when he was suppose to. You'll have to crate him when you cannot watch him versus the play pen. There's nothing really to do to stop them.

Ok, so we have decided to start crate training. He is crate trained for night time but with the kids out for the holiday break we slacked on the crate training during the day. My wife is a stay at home mom so,she will be with him all day. Any suggestions on a good schedule?
Any schedule that you keep pretty much regular is a good schedule. Ruutu used to be in his crate for 4 hours, then I'd potty, then 4 more hours since both my fiance and I work 8 hr jobs and I went home on my lunch break to let him out. As he aged, like 4 months old I stopped going home at 4 hours and held back a little until he was eventually able to hold it for 8+ hours. We had some messes occasionally (poo explosion in the crate) from me being later than he needed, but now he can hold it for 10+ hours if needed. Not that we try to keep him crated that long, but sometimes it is necessary.

Ruutu also sleeps in his crate next to my bed. That took a lot of patience due to him fussing to get out or refusing to go in his crate. Now we let him sleep on our bed for an hour or two before tucking him in his crate and I just wake him up and say let's go to bed and he goes right to his crate, no protest.

So really, it all depends on how much you want to crate him. Even when we're home Sat and Suns our dogs pretty much sleep from 8am-4pm like if we were at work. Now, we don't put them in crates if we're home, but I have crated Ruutu if I stayed home ill so I wouldn't have to worry about him running around and he was perfectly fine in his crate.

Yeah. Clara was around four weeks old when I first found her wiggling down the hallway. Her eyes were barely open and she was more waddling than walking, but she made it out of the whelping box. She can now jump a baby gate- and did so once when I came home and the stepson had her in his room so he could play video games AND watch dogs. Tara is taller but never got out of the whelping box, never crawled out of her puppy play pen, and never jumped over a baby gate.

I know exactly of what you speak

That is hilarious!! (Although I'm sure not for you trying to contain the little one...:rolleyes2:) I love that you captured it with the camera.

I knew Ruffles was my pick of the litter when I moved them to the pen in the kitchen from the whelping box at 3+ weeks and almost immediately she broke out of the pen. And kept doing it. Her littermates would just sit inside and watch. She was so proud of herself, prancing around the room. I knew then she was my puppy!

ii week old sheltie climbing out of play yard....HELP!!!

Penny...that pic is too funny. He sure has climbing 101 down pat. But, after all, you did name him "Scout"...so maybe he is just trying to do his job of scouting around to be sure all is well...which he can't do when confined to a play pen. Very cute...and very determined little lad! You are going to have a lot of fun with that wee boy! :smile2:

That pic is too funny and looks just like Chewie climbing out! I think we have finally nipped this in the bud (knocking on wood). It's such a relief to me because now I don't have to worry about him hurting himself while climbing/jumping out.
