11 week puppy and gluing ears?

I have had a very difficult time gluing my 16 week old shelties ears. I am using tear mender. It comes unglued after a couple of days and nothing.... I mean NOTHING removes the clumps of hard glue from her hair. I have tried the uni-solve wipes and it does absolutely nothing, doesnt soften one bit. I ended up having to cut some hair to get it halfway out. She still has hard clumps and unfortunately unglued ears. She freaks out when she sees me with the glue or solvent. I would like for her to have tipped ears but at this point it seems inhumane what I am putting her through. What am I missing here?

We use that for all our puppies and never had an issue getting it out with unisolve or detachol. Detachol does seem to work better IMO. I have even used just a small drop of Dawn dish soap and warm water in a pinch. It also lasts for weeks in place.

Sounds like too much glue is being used. I did that with my first pup and it does not stick properly unless it is hair to hair. Not glue to glue or hair to skin. I just glued a litter of 8 week old puppies yesterday and no issues. It is not inhumane and not one puppy fussed abit.

I have learned from trial and err how to tip my puppy's ears. I don't use glue directly on the ears because it's very hard to clean up and if done wrong can be very painful for the dog. I use Japanese or Zonas tape and Tear Mender glue. There is a You Tube video on tipping Collie ears that is basically the same concept that I use, except for I use glue and tape they just use tape, which isn't as strong.

the video is called, HF Lady Snickers Canine Ear Taping

I'm sorry I don't have a link, I'm not to good with computers.:rolleyes2:

First time gluing ears for me. I've been using hair extension glue (breeder's suggestion) and it seems to be working ok. Will be glad when I don't have to do this anymore! Lordy he always moves his head right when I'm putting it on! Lil goober...:smile2:

Melbell,

Thanks for the information. I took a look at Speed-Sew and am wondering how intense is it. I read where you have to use some type of solvent to dissolve the adhesive? I did see a step-by-step that showed to glue the hair from the tip of the ear to the hair above the head?

Thanks again.

Ed

I went to speed sew for Blake, and oh my heavens! Wished I found it sooner, cause it works awesome. I had a tube of Jiffy Sew,but speed sew far outweighs it in holding capabilites.
Blakes have been glued now for 3 weeks, with no signs of coming undone. I use detachol to remove it. Which I order from my Walmart pharmacy.
Since Blakes have been glued since 5 or 6 weeks old,and he is now approaching his first birthday, this will be his last gluing. His ears look great.

Yep, that's what I use too and it works just fine. Actually, with my previous puppy, I was looking online for what Sheltie people used and I found a Sheltie site that sold ear glue. I bought it and when it came to me I found out that it was hair extension glue from Sally Beauty Supply that costs $1.49! And I paid $6 for it  So I learned my lesson! My latest puppy is now 14 weeks old and I have to reglue his ears every week or so because he plays so rough with my other dogs that they pull the ears and the glue comes undone over and over and over...:biggrin2:

does he try to take his out?? mine literally scratches his out within a day.. wonder if hair extension glue would stay in better than speed sew for me.

Oh geez! Scammers are everywhere! Was a 1.99 at my Sally. Fillion scratches his ears a lot, but it stays put pretty well. Have to reglue about every other week also, but its latex so it just rubs off my skin (where a lot of it ends up! LOL) and I don't worry about it getting on his skin either.

Thanks all. I gave Mel a call at Wickets by Mel and had a long discussion, he's quite helpful and doesn't mind spending some time discussing the technique.

Given that I am a novice, he felt to use moleskin for gluing the ears; he also felt it is easier on the dog.

So, I have a kit coming to me from Mel's. Anyone out there use the moleskin technique?

Hi there,
I am just kinda scanning threads and came acrosss this one about gluing ears. I was going to offer you a nearly new tube of speed sew, that I had to order for Blake. It really does work wonderful. Average time his ears stayed glued, was almost 4 weeks. This glue far out weighs jiffy sew as far as performance.I wished I had used it for my other dogs.

Blake turned a yr. old today, and his ears have been glued since 6 weeks. So I am done with the gluing for him. I took glue out last night....and said "Blake you made it buddy"....beautiful ears, and worth the time.

Honestly, Detachol is NOT hard to find. You simply go to your Walmart pharmacy..talk to pharmecist and ask them to order you a bottle. I keep saying it,saying it...it takes a day for it to come in to the pharmacy. It is pricey, but a bottle lasts for a very long time.
When in a pinch, use vegetable oil,and a very fine tooth comb. Works well to.
And yes..Mel is awesome to deal with!
