360 left question

I know what you mean Racheal. I love watching the dogs do the backing up. I really thought it was what was supposed to happen. The problem we are having is that Darby sits every time we try that with him. If the way that DW is doing it is going to get her Qed, that is our immediate goal. If it's wrong, we want to focus on it and get it fixed before next weekend.

The easiest way to teach it is to do a quarter turn at a time. Have the dog in heel position, then take your right foot place it in front of the dog and tell them to "get back" (or whatever). Your foot should be close enough that the dogs goes "whoa, that's in my face" and gets up. Finish the pivot, then put the dog back in heel position. Once they learn that, you can work on the 360. I don't think that will happen in a week though. :smile2:

I have never seen someone NQ for not having the pivot style turn.

In our Rally class, the instructor told us to do all 270s and 360s like we're walking around the perimeter of a plate on the ground. For lefts that means that the dog's hind feet stay in basically the same place throughout the turn, so they're really pivoting on their hind feet.

I use a 'scoot' command, holding my right hand with the palm facing the dog in a pushing motion.

I got marked as an IP once for pivoting in place. I thought whatever as long as that dog stays in heel position.:rolleyes2: But from that point forward, I did it the way described above. Left turns/circles are the thing Diva has the most problem with yet.

You'd be amazed how quickly Darby learns with 110 volts and leather cat-o-nine tails.. (Cackle)

So in the end, understanding that this will take time to train, do we strive for the style I demonstrated or the style DW was showing?

Does it matter as long as the dog and handler go 360 degrees left?

IP = ??

So the idea is to actually walk in a circle?

IP is an incorrect preformance. -10pts unless you reattempt and get it right.

I have no idea why I got it. My dog, Justice, was in heel position the entire time. But the judge said he was pivoting not heeling. Could have been that judge. I since than I just walk in a small circle. No problems.

I'll see if I have a video of a left 360.

Ok, not sure if it's going to help you or not but here ya go!
Thanks for the vid, yep you do the footwork the way I do, except when I move Cadbury just stands there, waits for me to finish my silly dance and then catches up:o

I take it in Rally they aren't going for the same heelwork stuff as in obedience?

Here is a video of Diva doing a left 360. It is the 2nd sign and it isn't the best because I was dizzy from the first sign and DIva was sneezing.
Lovely vid - I'm noticing that in Rally they are less strict on the heelwork position. When we had a mini obedience comp at my club we did heelwork and our dogs had to be right beside us, front feet level with our feet at all times, and the dog looking up 100% of the time. If the dog looked straight ahead at any point you scored 0!:eek2:

It was a miracle I scored 7 (we were marked out of 10), if I hadn't messed up my about turn I could have come close to a 9.

To be honest, I have no idea... We went in yesterday and did a practice run. Our friend that does rally a lot told us that at our level, either way is fine. When I asked when would it matter she kind of wandered away. hehe.
