3yr. old in HIGH KILL SHELTER IN CA.

Hi Guys,
I got a message back from my contact at SSR. She told me that they do check for a microchip as soon as the dog comes into the shelter, however, it does happen that a microchip can be missed. They found Whiskey's on a second check.

She does feel that everyone at the shelter is doing their best to help the animals. So I guess I need to simmer down and be patient.

She is aware of the two shelties at the other shelter and they are working on getting them out, if their owner doesn't show up.

I'll try my best to get out to see Whiskey tomorrow or Tuesday.

Sorry Mark.....he's back in as of Friday. They discovered that he was microchipped, so he has to stay another 10 days. The rescue has him on hold. So they'll pick him up as soon as his 10 days are up.

BTW...The rescue and the volunteers deserve the credit for this, not me.

Oh I disagree, you've gone way above and beyond the call of duty, multiple phone calls, multiple trips -- you've spared no amount of effort to make absolutely sure this poor little guy's life didn't get cut short. So I stand by my original words! :yes:

That's kind of scary, that a chip can be missed, isn't it? As far as I can think, there are 4 reasons this might happen:

1. Chip failue (or intermittency)
2. Reader device failure or incompatibility
3. Chip float/drift off location (in the animal's body)
4. Operator error

We'll surely never know, but I wonder to which reason this shelter would attribute their initial failure?

An animal control cop here told me the id chip program in general is a huge success story; that when he picks-up an animal, if it's chipped and that chip is registered to an in-county address, he just takes the animal straight home. I wish Jake was with me at the time, I'd dearly love to know his chip is easily readable by animal control's field equipment...
 
I know my vet checks Gavin's chip every time they see him for his yearly. the low cost vaccination clinic does the same everytime I take him there. So I know his still 'shows up' when scanned. but I know they can migrate.
 
We know all about chip float. Beckon now has two -- our vet missed the first one becaure it had migrated. Oh wel, better safe than sorry!
