7 months tomorrow - adolescent punks up

Flyer was 8 months old yesterday. He's still a big adolescent punk and Justus really needs to bring him down a peg... Meanwhile the Lhasa has insisted on interviening and bites him every chance she gets. She is under my protection but honestly, I get it, she's an assertive thing and wants to teach him a thing or two. She acts like she really enjoys chasing him across the room.

Commands that were so good have fallen apart (the 5th week syndrome - it is supposed that is when a behavior chain settles from short term memory to long term. I don't know about that, I think this is just where generalizing a command to different situations and environments apply)

Also as a Public Service Announcement to all puppy owners, check those collars! I had loosened Flyers and sure enough he backed out of it in the front yard on a beautiful day and it was a very scary time getting him back into the house safely - he kept running to the street and I kept calling him back and he would come but not close enough to catch... Like a wave he would be drawn to the street, then back to me, and about 10 tries, I finally got enough hair to snag him. Holding him like a football and trying to recover from my panic, I got him back in the house and fitted his collar properly. We have not however, been outside the front door again since (this was Sunday, and the weather has been awful since)

I found nice martingales at pawmark, going to order his new one now....

He's such a pill. Love this boy but he's more intense than any I've had before!
(Bobby and Justus are now dubbed as saintly shelties!)

He's cute, he's sweet, he's a PIA!!!! :)
Welcome to Spitfire at 4

Any clues as to how long adolescent behaviour lasts?

Elsa is just coming up to 6 months and in the last week she has really started to be naughty, recall when she feels like it, forgotten sit and down and biting fingers and jumping :(

Our lovely puppy seems to have gone!

Hummm...sounds like your smart wee Elsa has been reading Hamlet on the sly..."To be(have) or not to be(have). That is the question." I would definitely keep her away from Shakespeare from now on!! :wink2:

Trini

8 months old now...

About a week ago I noticed that he wasn't emptying his bladder all they way, but has begun to stop more frequently on our walks to splash a little here and there.

On Sunday, it happened. The big event. He marked over a pee spot freshly made by Darius, our BC friend. It was the first leg lift. Impressive, he stood on his tippy toes. :biggrin2:

He is now um... maturing. Great. Time to watch like a hawk that he does not lift a leg in the house, in the training center, in the pet store. Justus did that *twice* but a stern "no-no" squashed the behavior and he was neutered shortly after that.

Flyer, Flyer, Flyer.... don't get too attached to those buddy - they are coming off. I just hope I can wait a few more months.

Geesh, the only problem with puppies, they grow up! (which is one of the best things about puppies too!)

Heh heh heh... Enzo's are coming off on Saturday. I thought he had marked inside a few months ago, but it turns out he just had a 'puppy moment' as he hasn't lifted inside since then. He has tried to lift in a friend's house, but other places, like stores, he's been fine. You're a big boy now, Flyer, but you still have to be good! :wink2:

Celtic went though the big jerk king of world stage at 9 month(the older dogs told him he is still a lowly puppy), the humping everything and I mean everything stage last month and now 2 weeks shy of 1 yr he lifted his leg last week for the first time on a pole outside the training building. Luckily he still isn't storing urine yet. Other than that he is really overall settling down again. We shall see how long that lasts.

Flyer is 9 months old today. He's becoming more boy, he
was caught lifting his leg on the ring gating at obed class last night, was scolded and taken outdide. Before the hour was over he was tempted to lift again but I was ready and he did not.

He is calming down a wee bit, and lives spending time in class, it's the cookies. :) I am in the Beginners class with him and it's fun to be a student. The teachers are my regular assistants, do I will enjoy a bit if heckling.... :)

If not for the leg lifting this would be a favorite time of his development. I'm determined to make it to Sept. To neuter, unless he starts marking in my house. Then I will neuter him myself. (Not really)

Flyer is 10 months old now, all is well. He's not peeing in the stores or obedience building anymore - but oh my when we went to visit a friend and he hosed on her couch!!!! :eek2: That was a scene that I trust will never be repeated --- he almost seemed remorseful that he caused me to fall flat to the floor as if I were having a cardic infraction. ;)

He's coming along nicely, but I admit, I am a slacker. We spend more time walking recreationally than in training. I am enjoying him as he seeks more of my attention than before. Who knew, I am as fun to be with as Uncle Justus. :) So glad.

He's a bit pushy, and a whole lot of fun.

My puppy, I think I'll keep him.
