8 1/2 month old puppy and housetraining

i have the same problem with my 6 month old .... i take him outside for 30 minutes and usually pees.... and as soon as he come in(5 to 10 minutes) he takes a big dump on the carpet.... he does 90% of his peeing outside but loves to poo in the house.. any advice for that?? besides what has previously been posted?
I suggest getting some better magazines for outside.

I found training Bacca that poo was harder to train than pee. Don't know why, but he would outside in the morning and go pee. Eat his breakfast and if I turned by head for even a second, I would find him squatting on the carpet.

So until that phase was over, he was crated if I could not watch him with an eagle eye.

If he even started to squat, he was picked up and put outside....sometimes leaving a trail behind him. But if he finished outside, then treat and praise. He got the idea pretty fast and I think was mostly housetrained by 12 weeks.

Bacca was trained by 12 weeks!!!! Wow, that's incredible, Megan is just now getting to where I can mostly trust her all the way to let me know, almost, and she's almost 6 months. I don't know how big your house is but ours is a two story and so I think she would get confused :confused2:. She did NOT want to poop inside at all, so training for potty was the harder one.

Both mine went backwards with their house training at that age too. I did confine their access to the house more as teenagers until I could trust them again. OntarioSheltie's advice is the way to go.

As for poops, I think I mentioned this in another thread, but I took Deska's poop outside and let him see me do it and I didnt let him accompany me to the toilet until he got the idea of no pooping inside.

Yeah I know...Bacca you're making all our pups look bad! Lexi is 17 weeks and still pees inside! She's like Megan though...doesn't want to poop inside and never really has.

Bacca, what are your tips? :wink2:

You poor thing, I would find that very frustrating to deal with especially after being outside for 30 minutes! I'm sure you know as soon as you see him squat, RUN with him outside, praise, praise when he finishes. I'm sure that has been posted already :rolleyes2:

Truly, guys!

It's crate training and eagle eyes! After Bacca went outside in the morning, he was back in the crate while I showered and blow dried my hair. If I could not see him out of the corner of my eye, he was contained. It helped that my breeder had started crate training him before he came home, so the first few nights were pretty easy. He slept through almost from the start.

Of course, lots of treats and tons of praise when they do it right. And extensive cleaning, when he messed up.

And regular visits outside. I timed these around sleep, feed and play cycles to help get him into a routine. And routine it is. I can pretty much nail both Indy and Bacca's schedules and they have nailed mine! They know their windows of opportunity. I

I'm a big one on routines to.And I actually had started a conversation in Japsers thread about him not pooping outside, and we had never had this issue with Trapp.Maybe 2 poo accidents in the house. He caught on very quickly.

And at almost 7 months,he is house trained. We have left him out of his crate at night,he stays out of his crate for extended periods during the day, while I am out and Brian is sleeping.Today I was gone from 10am-4pm. Brian went to bed at 1pm.
Jasper was put in his crate & Earnie & Trapp were left alone. And Janite even said to me.."don't be surprised that Trapp may have a relapse".We keep that in our minds,as yet we have no issues.

In Jaspers thread, everyone gave me wonderful ideas about Jaspers pooping in the house. And they have worked. So thank you everyone. We have had 2 full days of no accidents either way.

He's only 11 weeks, but I do know it really was frustrating that he could be outside for fairly long periods, and no sooner come in the house and do his thing~
Consistancy is key, crating or using an x-pen,can't be without some kind of containment. If you cannot keep a full watch on them, they need to be crated.
Making note of times they will poo,was also helpful,at least for us.

It's really different when yo have a doggie door and older Shelties. They did all the training for Beckon. It was shamefully easy! :o
