A little help on what to feed now

Thanks Ann and Dani and others who suggested FROMM. Since Diamond hasn't had the best record with contaminated food I stopped buying TOTW salmon. As I posted Lucky loved it. When I checked out Fromm the food looks like TOTW, smells like TOTW and to Lucky it must taste like it too. States on the bag Sweet Potato and Salmon.

Lucky gave me all paws up! I also bought Wellness food for the small breed, they love that too. The sheltie house is happy happy.

After four recalls with TOTW I'm done. They just got too big for their britches.

Wellness puppy food for large breed was not contaminated they pulled the food because of the Diamond plant, now they have their own plant too. What irritated me, Wellness was listed on the contaminated list, without an explanation. I stated that to Diamond. I asked them to enhance their findings, instead of listing Wellness in this way. Wellnes is a competitor of theirs, do ya think that was the reason an explanation was not there?

When Diamond sat on the phone with me the first time around, and lied to me
that my bag of food was fine. Well that did it for me.

Where did you hear that Wellness was contaminated? From Diamond? Has Wellness responded to this charge?

Thank you for all the great suggestions - I so appreciate them. Helpful for a worried mommy!:( You are all great.

By the way, I want or prefer to feed Frankie a grain free diet, so hopefully these brands include that option. :) Thanks again!

I feed Grain free Fromm protein is reasonable 28-32% with 4 varieties to choose from. Justice can't do cereal grains(wheat, rice, corn) at all and it works great for him. I did RAW for 1.5yr while I was working on his issues and frankly he does better on the Fromm.

there was one type of Wellness produced at the Diamond plant in the recall- that is all she is saying.......
and that it would have been nice if Diamond had provided more info.

Wellness as I stated in my post its not contaminated. They listed Wellness puppy food for large breed. NOT CONTAMINATED. Wellness pulled it just because the food was processed at the Diamond plant. Now Wellness has had their own plant since March of this year.

This is where I got aggravated because Wellness was put out there like it was all contaminated. I told Diamond they should enhance their list and state WHY that food was pulled. Their comment to me was OH THAT IS A GOOD IDEA. Talk about DUH.

Thanks everybody, this is a fantastic discussion with great options. :pop

The only thing I am concerned about with Fromm's Salmon option is it has Chicken liver and Chicken fat in the ingredients and Frankie's naturopath indicated that chicken can cause inflammation in the joints and in the body in general and this can irritate injuries, arthritis, limping, etc. Has anyone else heard this? I am wondering if the fat and liver from the chicken in the Fromm's would be a problem.

My gut does tell me a lower protein would be better as the only thing I can pinpoint that drove his liver values up was the switch to the higher protein food and then all of a sudden Frankie was not doing well. Unless he has an infection or something else  hope not - I will know more after the ultra sound tomorrow but this food thing is tough business. Part of me would like to go back to TOTW but another part is hesitant - you all have good reasons pro and con! :uhoh:

I will keep reading here and keep you updated. Thank you for your help. Any information I can add I will do my part too!

I had now heard that about chicken but not really my area. Can he do the beef frittata and veg variety of grain free Fromm. It uses Beef liver and no added fat, I am guess because it uses pork meal .

Generally yes lower protein is better for the liver. You will not find a lower grain free food then Fromm, TOTW, or Now! though I have looked. SO to get lower you will need to fed non grain free. One of the reason I don't care for Origen is because of the high protein level. Raw is only 19-20% on an as fed basis because the protein is diluted out with water as those really high protein diets 40% and up, are in my opinion unnatural. I like to stick to around 30% or under myself but it is hard with feeding restrictions.

If you're concerned about chicken and you want grain-free, I'd consider the Now! line of foods. The adult formula is turkey, duck and salmon and 26 percent protein plus grain-free. My dogs eat Now and Go and do wonderfully well on it. It's made by Petcurean out of Canada and produced in their own plant. I'm very comfortable feeding it. Here's a link to the Now product.

The Go line is slightly lower protein and there are a variety of proteins other than chicken, but they do include some grains. Two of mine eat the duck formula and do well on it. Go does make a grain-free formula but it's higher protein so I wouldn't feed it to a liver-compromised dog.

Also excellent foods, a bit harder to find in my area.

Okay, will check these out too. And have you heard of Evanger's - either the Meat Lover's or Whitefish (low grain) versions? or Innova Prime by Nurtura or California Naturals - these are also supposed to be great - produced in own plants - no China - any feedback on these foods? :rolleyes2:
