A Minimum Speed Limit!!!!

Well for goodness sake! You might remember I explained there had been problems with the British Agility Association concerning changes to jump heights. That resulted in my local venue going independent. At the time I was upset, now I am relieved.

The latest news is that the founder of BAA wants to introduce a 'minimum' time for a course and if your dog does faster that it you will be eliminated:eek2: All because she thinks people are making their dogs go too fast over the contact equipment.

She has also been going on about people training their dogs to 'ride the tilt' on the seesaw and so being jolted as it goes down. Now people are saying ban the seesaw!

For crying out loud! It is called AGILITY! This is going crazy. I won't be going back to BAA with this insanity going on:(

I agree I think this Lady need to get checked for a brain tumour :winkgrin:

 that is just what I was thinking.

As for training the dog to "ride the tilt" Birch did that naturally to teach him something else would have been impossible( same with slowing him down on the dog walk), he does not even notice hitting the ground, in fact he thinks it is fun.

I can understand her wanting to make things safe, but maybe she needs to consult and research before making rash decisions. You could suggest she look at what Australia did with the seesaw to make it safer. It was done with a lot of consultation and research into different options.

The seesaw is probably the most dangerous piece of equipment, esp when you're running outdoors. Heck I know, it's a seesaw accident that probably caused Tully to need a hip replacement. It was widely debated in Australia after many accidents. Yes speed can have an impact, but it's impossible to slow down a fast dog all the time and sometimes the do go hell for leather on the seesaw by mistake, and a lot of the accidents occur because of difficulty in differentiating between the seesaw and dog walk - from a dog's eye view they are both the same.

Last year ANKC completely redesigned the seesaw. It is now closer to the ground and much easier for dogs to tell the difference. There was a lot of hostility to the change - people calling it the 'weesaw' and threatening to pull out. But you know what, it was the best thing they did. No more accidents, no more intakes of breath as a dog mistakenly goes full throttle to the dog walk. And I know Tully was happy about it. We had stopped competing because she was too scared of the seesaw and dog walk, when we went back with the new seesaw she actually did both pieces of equipment without hesitating (and that was before I knew about her hip).

I know what you are saying about the seesaw Caro because Merlin has done the exact same thing. But some of the other 'rules' she is suggesting are becoming crazy. How am I supposed to know if I am running too fast on a course?

She claims she has research for all this, but she doesn't share it. I agreed with her on jump heights, but this constant nitpicking is going too far.

BAA was once about choice, which they complained the KC didn't offer, now they are removing that choice. Such a shame as BAA had so much promise originally.

Funny she's come up with setting a minimum course speed with her 'research' which was never discussed in Australia. And I know they did do a lot of research and had several vets on the research committee. Wonder where she gets her 'evidence' from, sounds like the fairies told her maybe...

How did she manage to get all this power? Is there not a committee or was it always about her? Is there enough people that your club can switch to KC agility?
