A scary thing happened to Kip’s leg (UPDATE on Clicking)

A few weeks ago Kip had his appointment with the orthopedic vet. This vet is supposed to be the best on the island for orthopedics and was recommended by several friends, so I felt good about going here.

The ortho vet reviewed all Kip’s X-rays, videos, and did an exam. He said there is zero indication that anything is wrong! He said that the click is most likely a random click and just the way Kip is. Just how some people have clicking joints for no known reason. The vet didn’t recommend any further diagnostics and basically said :nothing is wrong, just let Kip enjoy his active life.

This was such an amazing relief!!!I’ve been worrying about this ever since he was a puppy and now I can relax and just enjoy life with Kip.

I sure wish I’d gone to this vet in the first place. I could have saved myself over a year of anxiety and stress. Hopefully I’ve learned my lesson and I’ll just go straight to the specialist for future issues.

I’m not exactly mad at my regular vet, but I am a little frustrated. At various times during Kip’s puppy hood, I was told to put him on crate rest, prescribed NSAIDS unnecessarily, and told that “with one wrong move, his knee could ‘go’”. Obviously that freaked me out so bad! Then when they recently told me he could have a torn meniscus, basically the vet (different from our usual vet, but at the same clinic) was like “but we can’t tell for sure, nothing we can do, he could end up crippled, goodbye.” Which was also super upsetting. The orthopedic vet said there was NO WAY he could have a torn meniscus because that would be very painful. Shouldn’t my regular vet have known that?!!? Ok, rant over.

I’m super happy for Kip! I’m also very happy with the orthopedic vet. Although we only talked over the phone due to Covid, I was really pleased how they handled the case. Very thorough, answered all my questions, explained everything, took plenty of time rather than rushing me out the door. I think I may just switch vets.. Unfortunately the ortho vet is almost 2 hours away..

Fantastic that you had such a good talk with him! I had the same experience with the holistic vet...very informative!
That’s awesome that he cleared everything up with you, I can understand your fear after being told the worst from the other vets!
 
Hope he is fine, Sca would have gave you a heart attack daily. He flung himself around with abandon. I actually moved his food bowl as he would come flying into the kitchen throw it into a slide then use the cabinet as a stop at the food bowl (cannot waste a millisecond getting food) He did stuff like that all the time.
 
Sorry you have gone through so much stress. Great news on Kip though! Sadly, it's like anything - there are good ones and bad ones and you just never know....

Just for good measure, do you have Kip on any supplements? I use Nature's Farmacy Complete which is a mix of 3 of their best supplements n one - one being for joints! https://naturesfarmacy.com/dogzymes...ne-and-chondroitin-msm-yucca-hyaluronic-acid/ It's a dry supplement but I sprinkle about 1/2 tsp on Brodie's kibble at night. Sometimes give dry, sometimes add water, sometimes green beans with their juices, sometimes a sardine. Just a thought - I started Brodie as a pup because I knew I wanted to do agility and wanted something good for his innards!

I do!

From the time Kip was a puppy, he’s gotten salmon oil and Glycoflex (joint supplement with glucosamine, Chondroitin, etc).

Currently Kip gets salmon oil, Doctor’s Best (Hyaluronic Acid, Chondroitin, and Collagen), and a supplement recommended by Kip’s PT - Myos canine muscle supplement. I’m considering putting him back on Glycoflex as well, but since the ingredients overlap with the Drs Best, I would probably need to choose one.

Ooh, the nature’s pharmacy looks good too. Maybe I could do that instead of Glycoflex. I’ll think about it
 
Oh I am so pleased to see this, but kind of horrified at some of the things the other vets said - none to diplomatically, either, from your description. No wonder you were worried and stressed out. Glad you and Kip can just get on with enjoying life now, and that the ortho vet was so helpful and responsive.

Ann here on SN recommended the Nature's Farmacy and we're pleased with it. If you ever have issues, they wil chat with you on the phone and make recommendations. When Kooper, our senior doxie, started with kidney issues the man there spent a LONG time on the phone going over what I fed him for kibble, for treats, for supplements and then explained a better diet for him - what to feed him and why. Nice folks!
