A Sheltie With "Pink Eye"

Good Day,

I was wondering if anyone might have experienced this with their Sheltie or if anyone had any general thoughts on what this may be.

Our 4-year old sheltie Noah has always been in good health, but I noticed this summer that her normal sweet-faced Sheltie look was not the same. One of her eyes had a almost pinkish look around the edge of the eye. I also noticed that she had lost a little of her hair around her mouth.

The vet examined him and thought it might be an allergy of some type because he said dogs will sometimes develop allergies around this age. He put him on medication and it seemed to clear up most of the problem. The vet also mentioned that it could be an auto-immune disease, but was holding off on that for now.

The vet said on the re-exam that Noah looked better after the medication and suggested that if it happened again to give the dog Benadryl.

It did come back again and the Benadryl hasn't really helped. There is also a lot of head and body shaking and the dog is also dragging his paws over his eyes.

No real changes in the food. He's been eating Dr. Harvey's for a couple years but it does have quite a bit of grain in it and didn't know if that could all of a sudden cause an allergy problem.

I was just curious if anyone had experienced this with their Sheltie or had an opinion.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer.

Pat

Hi Patrick, Welcome to SN!

I'm sorry to hear Noah isn't feeling well. My oldest sheltie sometimes had redness in one of his eye's when he was younger. I never noticed any fur loss, he did rub his eyes a little though. But it always went away eventually. It could be allergies to his food. Maybe switching him to a grain free or low grain diet. Or a shot of steroids from the vet. Hope he gets better soon Pat!:fl

Welcome to the forum, Pat. I'm sorry to hear Noah is having a health problem. There are lots of people at SN who have tons of knowledge about all kinds of dog issues. My Shelties have not experienced anything like Noah has....sorry I am not much help.

Poor Noah, hope he gets well very soon. Its hot here too in FL and allergies is very common on this season, especially eye redness. Probably the weather has something to do with allergic reaction so we always ensure Dolphy is feeling much comfortable and cool. He enjoys the stuffed frozen kong and his cooling bed, we got this chillow that we throw in the refrigerator at night and insert to his regular bed to make it a cool on, works for hours when we are out for work and school, see how it works here http://www.petstreetmall.com/Chillow/4055/4830/details.html . BTW, how long does your dog take the benadryl? It may take a week to show some results.

Maybe give you vet a call back and see if they have something else to help him so he isn't pawing at his eyes and so itchy as well as trying a grain free food.
