A truely odd puppy

Do you have a hallway that you can work him in on the leash? This is what I did with both Noah and Emma - it worked great for teaching them the leash. I didn't wait to go outside with them.
 
Give it time. It probably feels like an issue now, but it will most likely resolve itself as the pup grows, gets used to his new life, matures, and is trained.

I would definitely do handfeeding. When he gets his rabies shot (16 weeks, right?) I would think about a puppy class to solidify bonding and bud some confidence in him. He sounds like Duncan (though Duncan was a rambunctious little pup at times) in that he seems more mellow. Duncan my little sweet pup took months to really click with me and at a year old is still working on confidence. Agility, flyball, and all of the training we do at home have done wonders for him.

I hadn't thought of the confidence issue before because we also got him after having another breed - Papillons. Pierre is nothing sort of outgoing and brimming with self confidence. It didn't cross my mind until much later.
 
the memories...

when my pup was 9 weeks old, i took him over to a friends house. 5 minutes in, he asks me what's wrong with gavin! he had grown up with goldens and labs and my sheltie wasnt acting like what he expected. of course, he loves gavin and is very happy he isnt a lab (otherwise he would have chewed up his house during the puppy stage!). Just give him time (I know its hard....I didn't have a snuggly puppy and that's what everyone thinks they are getting) and remember the work you put in now will benefit you and the dog for the rest of their hopefully long lives.

Now, I asked the breeder for the 'calm' one. and am very glad I did. he is welcomed just about everywhere I take him because he's generally laid back (except around other dogs where he can play). He isn't a velcro sheltie, but he definitely keeps track of his people. and every pup is different, so just enjoy the one you have :D
 
Well we were doing good and seeing a lot of improvement as far as him coming out of his shell... Until last night. I was hand feeding him and thought I saw a flea on his belly (even though he just got a dose of advantage last week). Well I went to pick him up and flip him over to get it and he starts yelping like I'm killing him. So I set him down and he went to the opposite side of the couch and gave me this look like I just did something horrible to him.

I'm starting to think he's a drama queen... Because we've done that many times before without a problem.

I won't lie it can be frustrating at times.
