About to be owned by a sheltie!

Welcome and congratulations on the imminent arrival of Eli.:biggrin2:
I love that you want to provide him with a home rather than just a new house, what a lucky sheltie!

Personally I like a bristle brush for the main coat and a pin brush for the rear aspect (!). I think the type of brush depends on the thickness of the coat, pin brushes get deeper into very dense coats.

Just a pointer, shelties have very narrow heads and can back out of a fixed collar unless it is quite tight, so until he is feeling settled and confident with you, it might be an idea to use the harness as well as collar on walks too as a fail safe.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about him and seeing pictures too of course:yes:

Welcome and congrats on Eli!!!! I bet you guys are busting at the seams for next weekend to come!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree w/ the advice of a harness. I know Brandy would've gotten out of just a collar at first until she got used to walking w/ me, the cars, etc. You've gotten a lot of other good advice too. Have fun preparing all the good things for him this weekend and I can't wait to see pics and hear stories!!!:biggrin2:

Hi there! So my husband and I finally decided to get a sheltie and I was lucky enough to find this website! We are so excited, as you can imagine! His name is Eli and he's a 6-yr-old black tri. (We wanted an older dog, for now, until we have our own home and aren't renting.)

I'm driving to pick him up next weekend, and I've tried to make a list of everything that I need to buy beforehand. (I want him to come to a home and not just a new house. :smile2:) Any suggestions? The breeder has given me a ton of them, and I've bought a large kennel, but I'm not sure what size doggie bed to buy, or whether or not I need to buy a harness for our ride home...Also, I don't know what type of brushes? I've heard stuff about the Furminator??
Any replies would be greatly appreciated!

Congratulations! Your life will never be the same. (and that in a good way). I am glad you are getting an older dog as they are so deserving of a good home and he will be grateful to you for giving him a second chance.

Just wanted to mention the furminator. I bought one for my sheltie but before using it I asked the people on another sheltie forum (with lots of breeders and people who show dogs as well as us ordinary types) about it and was advised not to use it on a sheltie as it would take out too much of the undercoat. So, I returned it, unused and cannot give first hand knowledge of how it would work. I think there are lots of good brushes out there that would work.

Good luck to all of you!

Welcome to Sheltie Nation! My two cents:
1. Furminators are ok, but I like a pin brush.
2. What's wrong with your bed? Hahahahaha -- sorry, I sleep with dogs.
3. Definitely have a harness or collar for the ride home. You don't want any problems early with escapes.
4. It will take Eli a while to settle in. Give him time to wander, sniff, and don't be weirded out if he seems a bit reserved for a while.

You are going to love being a Sheltie Mom and Dad! :biggrin2:

Thank you all so much for the great suggestions and opinions! I'm so glad that I found a forum where everyone is as excited as we are about our addition to the family! :wink2:
