Addie's turn to get spayed...nervous!

That is such a cute story about your birds and Addie. My girls never bothered the incision at all, even without the cone. Liam, when he was neutered, licked all the topical off his belly - it was pink and I guess he figured pink was not a boy colour.

Glad she is feeling much better. Such a relief for you.

I'm so glad that Addie is doing well. I have been thinking about her. It's really amazing how fast they heal and get back to normal.

It's been 8 days since Lacey's spay and keeping her quiet during the day is not really happening, but she seems to go in short spurts and does sleep most of the day. It's really hot right now so I think that helps keep her down.

Addie is adorable...and such a lil lass, I would have been even more anxious given her smaller size. I don't know if it holds true every time, but one of the Vet techs that called to check on Savannah said the smaller ones bounce back faster. That was true in my case, Savannah was up and bouncing in her carrier trying to SHOW me that she was just FINE, and to TAKE her OUT, ha...

aren't you glad this is a one time only experience...

I am so glad that Lacey is doing well Judy. I hear you on the keeping them quiet. We have central a/c and we like being cold, so it is always set lower Maybe I should try putting it higher and see if I can get her to do that sleep thing you mentioned LOL.

Thank you Emmas Mom :) it was really adorable when it happened. The younger one was just so concerned over her.

Thanks Tesslynn! Yes, I am VERY surprised how quick she has bounced back, considering the state she was in on Friday morning. Savannah sounds like fun! How on earth did you get her to settle?

And yes - I am SO glad this is a one time thing!

Does the incision usually scab over? Today is post op day 8. The vet had used glue and dissolvable stitches. Vet just saw her on Tuesday. According to DH, the vet thought it looked good on Tuesday and there was a thin scab running the length of entire incision.

Wednesday she got into a frenzy over some guy revving his motorcycle near the house, and she went ballistic. I immediately checked her over and a teeny (like no bigger than the lead of a pencil tip) looked shiney and a little clear pink on a tissue. I put her on crate rest the rest of the day and it never bled bled, and next morning looked fine.

The scab seems to be working its way out of the incision but I dont know if I need to take her to the vet. DH thinks the incision is healing from the inside out, which is what is pushing the scab out. It is not warm or tender, and there is no discharge. The skin is a little light pink near the incision but that has been like that since the surgery and has gotten no worse.

I don't want to put a photo up here in case anyone is squeamish, but I can send via email.

Would anyone be able to tell me if I should make a trip to a vet?

From your description it sounds like it is just fine :) I work as a surgical nurse and that sometimes happens with our patients.. unless it really bled or you see signs of infection (discharge, heat, pain) then I wouldn't worry. You can e-mail it to me if you'd like though!

It doesn't sound like there's anything going wrong, but you might want to just give the vet a call. For my Spirit, all follow up visits were free of charge after her spay (and I panicked over EVERY LITTLE THING and took her in at least 5 times after her surgery). The only thing that was wrong was the internal stitches popping through, and they were just snipped out as they appeared. And one time I thought her incision had re-opened, but it turned out to just be a smudge of dirt at the edge of the glue. I'm sure the vet thought I was out of my mind. But Spirit was fine and it didn't cost me anything.

It sounds like she is fine, but if you are nervous and want to get her checked take her in. I do a tummy check on Lacey twice a day and she is fine. As a matter of fact she was fin enough to walk 4 miles with me this morning and is finally pooped out. She has bounced back and I'm so glad we are officially off rest because I gave up on it a few days ago anyways.

I know it's such a short time, but it sure feels like forever when you have a crazy dog who you are supposed to try to keep quiet.

So sorry for such a late update. Work was crazy.

The incision looks much better than it did the other day. I think her Thundershirt was what caused part of the scab to come up, although DH thinks it was just the stitches dissolving and moving. We have had rain daily for about 2 weeks and everything is flooded. She is terrified of thunder and the shirt is the only thing that keeps her calm. To avoid another injury, I had to use it.

She started messing with the incision the night I posted my question, and was back in the cone of shame. I thought maybe it was hurting, because she hadn't messed with it until that day. She didn't care though because she has been getting pumpkin when she gets the Metacam so she took it like a champ LOL.

Today the incision has no scab except at the top and the bottom (maybe they are stitches instead?) The wound is mostly closed, and dry with no shiney-ness or pink. I think we are good now.

Thank you to everyone that helped ease my mind. :hugs
