Addie's turn to get spayed...nervous!

Thank you everyone! She is home, sleeping in her bed. They gave her Metacam for pain. My arthritic Cockatiel also has Metacam, so I am familiar with it. And we learned she is only 9.8 pounds (guess our scale at home is off LOL). So, even tinier. I think that the girl who scheduled the appointment did not know that they give some to take home.

When we picked her up the tech told us that everyone loved her and they were playing with her before she went back in for surgery this morning. Then the tech kissed her nose and told her she loved her before we came home. Love this vet!

She is still super groggy and out of it right now. They said she probably won't eat tonight, but we should offer it just in case.

I'm sure you are quite relieved.

I was told to only offer half of what she normally eats and just a little water. Lacey didn't want to drink, but she did eat. I made her an egg and gave her just half of it.

By tomorrow she will be feeling a lot better and ready to go back to her normal diet.

Just for an update -

She was pretty out of it for most of last night. I think she was in pain or uncomfortable because she kept waking herself up and walking as fast as she could to a different spot, and then stood there for a few seconds before she laid back down and was out again. We got her to eat with a little bit of her meatballs for her class. I had to give her water by syringe because she could not figure out how to drink, and was uncoordinated. She kept licking her lips like she was parched, so it was the only thing I could think of. DH got her to potty finally around 9:30 or 10.

She got up around 3 a.m. this morning, fully awake and alert. I took her outside We have a small (and I mean small) step down onto the back step, and then again into the grass and she wouldn't walk, so I had to gingerly put her in the grass to go. Wound up hand feeding her and water by syringe again. We had an awful storm around 5, and DH wanted to put on her thundershirt to calm her, but I told him no, because it would be too close to her incision. So none of use slept past 5 really. Her barking, growling, being uncomfortable kept us all up. I wish it had been time for pain meds. We will give her some pain meds later on.

I spoon fed her some canned food for breakfast. The cone makes her think someone is going to steal her stuff. It is such a pain to get on and off, or else we would take it off. I kind of want to buy an inflatable one at the store, but don't know if it is worth it. Right now, she is following me everywhere and won't lay or sit, probably because it hurts. Ugh. I don't know if it is ok to give her the meds now or not. Her surgery was at around 11 yesterday, and we can only give her the Metacam once a day.

Jamie, if she continues to seem to be in considerable pain you might ask your vet for some Tramadol. Different dogs feel pain differently, some don't seem bothered after a spay and others are in real discomfort.

When mine have had to be in an E-collar, I don't remove it for meals or drinking...you can either hold up their dish to right under their nose (inside the E-collar) or you can elevate their dish so they can get the E-collar to fit around the outside of the dish while they eat or drink.

Hope Addie feels better very soon!

Thanks Trini! I did get her Metacam in her this morning, and within 30 minutes she seemed to perk up. Once we got the inflatable e-collar on her, she was her old self. We have struggled this afternoon to stop her from running around lol. It was a complete 180 from yesterday.

I think it was the combination of the anesthetic, and pain meds wearing off from the surgery, it being too soon for her at home meds, and being grumpy from the cone. I do have the emergency vets # so if she reverts to how she was this morning, I will ask them for Tramadol. Thank you for that suggestion!

Jamie, sounds like Addie is doing great...I doubt you will see any reversal...the challenge now will be keeping her relatively quiet for the next few days! LOL

Addie is doing well. She finally offered to eat her kibble on her own (the last two days have been canned food - because it has moisture in it and she thinks it is yummy). My parents came over yesterday. They adore her, and it was so funny to see my parents trying to be extra gentle with her, almost as if she was a newborn baby LOL.

Her tummy must be healing and itchy because she keeps making attempts to lick it, but the inflatable collar has been good at stopping it. So, she tends to lick at what she can get to (usually a back leg). The incision site looks good - clean and dry. She can't scratch her head with the collar on, so we will scratch it for her if we notice she has tried to scratch. She is so grateful and the way she looks at you when you hit 'the spot' is priceless.

It has been hard keeping her relaxed - good thing for bully sticks!

I don't think I mentioned this the other day, but it was cute so I figured I would. I have a 15 year old Cockatiel and a 5 year old Cockatiel (rescued the younger one at a pet store that had her in a fish tank with like 15 other birds of varying species). Addie has invented a rule that if they are out and exploring, she must lay down and watch from a distance. Well, when we brought her home in Thursday, both birds saw her being placed in her dog bed and not move. Both stayed at the bottom of the cage and watched, and when we let them out, they chose to walk on the floor and walk over to see if she was ok. Addie was none the wiser, but I think the three of them rather like each other :hugs
