Adopting

Ha Ha. I meant Melody is the bitch in the house (which is true, I mean, she is indeed a "mother dog" and she did indeed have puppies in her past according to the vet who spayed her AND she wears that title really well). But then there's me, hee hee. If the tiara fits . . . Shall I further muddy the waters by saying we DO actually have a Queen in the house? Pandora is our female (cat). Please note, we DO NOT raise chickens though.

Laughs.

As to conspiracies -- well, we have new neighbors building a bug-out off the grid home across the street from us and these folk have kindly filled us in on every form of conspiracy we didn't already know about. Yikes.

Anyone who abhors the word bitch Id like to drop off at a dog show for say 15 minutes...after that 15 minutes I can bet they wouldnt bat an eye! As the stewards stand ring side screaming can I have the open bitch class!

This, to me, is serious false advertising when you're suggesting that breeders are the bad guys as most of them do (i.e. the ad with the tag line: "Adopt, don't buy."). Perhaps those of us who breed purebred dogs have become overly sensitive to terms like that now that we're frequently portrayed in such a negative light.

If the so-called "dog lovers" have their way, there won't be a fecund mutt left in the civilized world, at which point the entire domestic canine species will be in the hands of purebred breeders.

care to elaborate on this??? I (as a purebred breeder) see it as quite the opposite as there is soo much legislation out and coming out it is nearly impossible for us to continue on as a breeder and many people who have been breeding for 30+ years have decided in the last few months to just throw their hands up and walk away do to the frustration and legal issues.

When we first start our 4H meetings the first thing us advisors do is start teaching kids that female dogs are bitches. We have them say it out loud, the younger kids always look at their parents first like they are going to get into trouble for saying a "bad" word  We also take them to the Toledo dog show in June so they hear that word in a positive light.

I grew up reading Albert Payson Terhune. I didn't know "bitch" was a so-called bad word for years!!

Sure there will. People will always be stupid and irresponsible, filling the shelters with their responsibility. Those of us trying to do it legally however, with good, health tested stock, are being legislated out of existence. Want to keep more than four intact bitches? Too bad, now you have to be regulated by the feds. This means impermeable flooring (no carpet or hardwood), regulated exercise space (regardless that your dogs are kept loose in the house all day), random inspections, etc. A lot of things that you can't actually meet in a regular house. Oh, and then zoning, because likely you are zoned residential, with restrictions on the number of dogs, etc…

But your idiot neighbor will always let his pit bull run free to breed you other idiot neighbors labradoodle.

I got furious with a woman the other day for berating my friend for buying a puppy from a good breeder, rather than going to a rescue. She had the cheek to suggest the term 'ethical breeder' was an oxymoron:gaah

Talking about writing and semantics. I had an unpleasant chat with one of my editors about the use of the term WWI. He declared it was an Americanism which was offensive to true members of the commonwealth because the US was late for both wars! I considered this the most ridiculous piece of tripe I had ever heard, but he's the boss who pays my bills, so I have to put up with it. I have since asked around and only one other person had ever heard the suggestion that 'WWI' was offensive. I would be interested to know your thoughts on that, as I intend to keep using WWI except for articles to this particular editor.

Labgirl: Let me share in your :gaah. To suggest that there are no ethical breeders is as absurd as suggesting that ALL breeders are ethical. We have had many threads posted here questioning the ethics of some breeders while extoling the ethics of others.

On to point two. I think that working for your editor would severely test my resolve to never direct words like "idiot" and "moron" toward another individual. I have never heard anything like what he claims. I would have been tempted to ask him whether or not he (and others of his ilk) would have preferred that the United States stayed out of either WW altogether since neither was initial directed toward the U.S.? As the proud son of a WWII veteran, I have done some research (primarily on WWII) and come across several reference sources written about the wars by British authors with WWI or WWII in their titles. Why would that be if the term were "offensive"? I think your editor might be - - one of the words I don't like to use.

I could invite him to come live here in Virginia. Some legislators are trying to change the name of the Sea of Japan to avoid offending Koreans. :rolleyes2:
