Advantix II Dosage

My husband and I have a two year old Sheltie and a we just adopted a 6 month old Sheltie this weekend. I have been putting the whole tube of 11-20 pound Advantix II on our two year old Sheltie for the past year with no issues (she is a little over 18 pounds). I went to order more for our new puppy, and I was reading the FAQs on petco.com and someone had mentioned that their dog had a reaction to it and their eyes became blurry. Someone else mentioned that they have to use a syringe and measure out a certain mL amount to put on their dog to not cause any problems. So now I'm worried that I've been putting too much on our two year old, and I don't want to order any more until I figure out what to do.

Does any one know an appropriate mL to measure out to put on an 18 pound Sheltie? Thanks for your help!

I have always used the whole dose of Advantix on my Shelties (although they're around 20 lbs). I think if your dog is 18 lbs you should be OK, especially since he's so close to the top of the range.

I wouldn't use the same thing on your puppy though. Depending on its weight, I'd get a smaller dose.

The thing my vet told me that's important with Advantix is not to put the whole dose in one spot. I put it in three or four spots down the dogs' back, starting at the back of the neck. For what it's worth...

As a side note, I found this year that using one part apple cider vinegar to three parts water in a spray bottle works as well as any of the commercial flea and tick repellents. One of mine can't use the commercial products and at the suggestion of someone here, I tried the vinegar this year. It's amazing and not toxic. I just spray her lightly every other day or so and brush.

flea control

Yup, the vinegar and water works and so too does diatomaceous earth. I am done using chemicals on my dogs, done and doner!

How does the vinegar affect their coat? I'm not happy with using the Advantix 2, but heck, even my vet no longer carries Frontline Plus because too many people here claim it doesn't work (it didn't when I lived in that area). But I've heard some horror stories about Advantix.

Also, for the diatomaceous earth, what kind of dosage do you use? Do you feed it to the dogs, or put it on their coat. I know, I should do a search, which I'm going to do now. :)

Thanks.

DE is used by sprinkling around the yard and you can also put a little directly on your puppies fur. It can be drying though. We had no fleas, none, zip, nada, all summer and into the fall. The one tick that tried to latch onto my dog was not able to sustain at all, and quickly died.

No the vinegar does not dry them out, it actually adds gloss and shine to their coat. THe smell dissapates quickly also.

I have found that WolfRanch is a great site to learn and you can even ask questions about diatomaceous earth.

I get my DE from a tractor supply/pet feed outlet. Just make sure it is FOOD GRADE only. There is DE for pools, that is not what you want.

DE also keeps ants, roaches, spiders etc. away and being it is safe to consume, you can put it into your house with no fear of toxic side effects to anyone at all.

Best,
Kate

Thanks for the info. I'll go read the site. Koji is more prone to getting fleas, but it'd be nice to go "natural" with Miko's health issues.

wolf creek ranch

Make that wolf creek ranch, the other wolfranch is a catalog of housing developments, lol, I swear I don't know where my mind gets to sometimes.

You can also key in diatomaceous earth and it will show wolf creek ranch.

The only problem I found with DE is that you have to reapply it every time it rains. If you have a lot of property, that's tough.

I agree that the vinegar doesn't affect their coats at all and it doesn't smell once it's dry. And my dogs love it. They're always licking where I've sprayed them! I keep looking for critters, especially her in Tick Land USA and can't believe it works as well as it does.

Oh yes

Yup, pain in the arse to reapply de to the yard, I agree. Good exercise though, yes? Lol.

With permission from my Italian friends, we are welcome to call our vinegar dogs, little guidos!!!!!

is Advantix II OK for blue merles?

Thank you for the tip about apple cider vinegar-- I just applied it to my 3 dogs and hope it will work! Didn't see any fleas jumping off but if it will repel them I'll be thrilled.

One of my dogs is really being attacked by fleas, and Frontline is no longer working. I'm seriously considering using Advantix but I know some chemicals are known to be unsafe for blue merles (I believe Ivermectin is one such chemical). Has anyone done the research into which chemicals Advantix uses, and more importantly, where those are safe for blue merles? :confused2:

Thank you--
Diane and her crew in southern California (flea paradise)
