Aggressive when clipping nails

Well, after all your wonderful suggestions, I still couldn't get her to allow me to clip her nails. Her nails HAD to be done, so I had no choice but to have my husband help me.

We burrito wrapped her in a towel and left one leg out at a time. He held her mouth closed up against him. I would talk to her while I clipped. She struggled and fought through the first two. Then finally gave up for the last two, she wasn't happy and was making the most bizarre noises. She actually had us laughing at her LOL

As soon as he set her down, I started praising her really heavy and got her all excited and forgetting about what we just did. She got 1/2 a hot dog and then we played tug-o-war. It's one of her favorite games and I thought that would help her get out some of her pent up aggressions from the nail clipping.

I hated to make it a negative experience, but had no other choice :( She was slathering me with kisses within an hour, so I guess she still loves me ;)

I'm going to go ahead and order the Peticure so that I can cut them shorter and won't have to do it as often.

What do you know about Peticure? Is it really do much easier?

Like you, I dislike the ritual of finding the moment in my schedule and my pups that is quiet enough to do the job. If there us an easier way, then I'd love to hear about it

And while on grooming topic.....what about the Furberator (sp?) Seems like too good to be true. Has anyone tried it?

I really don't know anything abou the Peticure other than what others here and on another forum have posted. But it looks to me like we can get her nails much shorter this way, which would be nice.

Don't know anything about the Furminator either. I don't have any problems with hair at the moment. I'm sure that's gonna be changing though :wink2:

Petacure/Dremel and Furminator

The Peticure is a rotary tool that is identical to a Dremel with the addition of a guard that collects the nail sand. This rotary tool sands down the nail instead of cutting it, which is supposed to cause less trauma to the nail since clippers tend to crush the nail while cutting it. Its also supposed to be much less painful if you sand too much nail off and reach the quick. The only downside I've found is that the noise may bother some dogs (although it didn't bother mine) and it takes longer (or maybe its just that I am slower and others are not). You also have to be careful not to apply the dremel for more than 3 seconds or it heats up, but I've not found this to be an issue if you're doing it correctly.

If my dog had white nails and I could see where the quick was I'd stick to using the clippers. However this is not my case.

I switched to using my husband's Dremel after slightly nicking one of Sadie's quicks. I barely touched it but she's very dramatic and didn't forgive me for months. She gets very excited when the Dremel comes out because she knows it means that she's going to get treats for simply sitting still. Some times she dozes off when I'm sanding her nails. This is the web site that I used for training myself:

As for the Furminator, it seems that you either love it or hate it. I personally have one and love it. If you don't do your own grooming then I'd say that you probably don't need to spend the money but I've found it to be a must have if you're doing your dog's grooming yourself. It works just as the web site states EXCEPT you need to be far more gentle than the web site shows. The fur does come out as shown also. Don't buy it in a store, keep an eye out for it on ebay, you'll pay a lot less money for it.

There are thread in grooming on the peticure and furminator to read more about what people think of these products.

I seemed to have followed the pattern of some of the earlier postings. At first I was able to clip Spencer's nails with no problems. :mad:Then I got the quick and that was it as far as he was concerned. Clippers out - dog on the run or dog tryng to nip. So then I muzzled him, had him go up onto "his" chair and I sat in front of him (and kind of leaning on him) and clipped his nails. The moment I was done, I released the muzzle and started to throw a soft toy for him to fetch. I did this maybe two or three times. Then I decided to leave the muzzle off to see what would happen. I still had him up on the chair with me, no muzzle, no leaning on him, me just sitting in front of. Clipped all nails and immediately upon releasing him, started playing fetch. Now I can keep him on the floor or wherever I want him and sit in front of him to clip the nails. Playing fetch comes immediatley after the nails are done. Maybe if your dog absolutely loves doing something or a very special treat and learns that after nails are clipped, the wonderful treat or game follows, it might work.:smile2:

It took me a few months to win Sadie's trust back when I nicked her quick. It took a great deal of patience and some really good treats but eventually she remembered that nail clippers = yummy treats. Now that I use the Dremel instead of clippers she enjoys the experience even more

We've made progress! :biggrin2:

Today I decided to trim Madi's feet. I'm waiting to bathe her until she's done with her heat cause she's still yucky :dead: Anyways, I got out the comb and started with that cause she LOVES being combed. Then I started playing with her feet and she wasn't resisting so I got the scissors and started trimming. She didn't like it, but sat pretty still.

I did one foot at a time, letting her get up, play and have treats after each foot.

Well, she still had hair around her nails, so I decided to get my husband's beard and moustache trimmer. I feed her a couple treats off of it and then turned it on and fed her a couple treats off of it. Then I laid her down and began to shave the hair from around her nails.

She never even flinched :eek2: I was touching each nail with the trimmer and she didn't seem to care!

Soooo . . . I'm going to buy a dremmel for her nails. I looked in the peticure, but I think putting her nail into the guard might freak her out. With the dremmel I can just touch her nails like I was doing with the trimmer :)

We did it! WOOHOO!!

Madi's nails have been trimmed with the Dremmel!! :biggrin2: She did sooooo good. She just laid there and closed her eyes.

I'm so proud of her :biggrin2:
