Am I doing something wrong?

Welcome -- and you're sure getting great advice! I have four Shelties. Layla began very reserved as a puppy and wasn't a big kisser, but now that she's four, I get more kisses. Bits would rather play ball than eat -- "Will kiss for ball." Annie kisses when you come home and likes to lick hands while relazing on the bed with you. Beckon slobbers all over everyone -- he's our only male and turns one on Thursday.

Do you give them the peanut butter kongs together. I ask because what ever Maverick has Ryder wants. Does not matter if he has the same thing. And Ryder is one tough puppy. He plays hard with Maverick in tug. He will take and get anything out of Mavericks mouth. Its a game for them. Sometimes Maverick gets it back and sometimes he lets him have it. I can get Maverick to leave it but Ryder is two months.Would you suggest giving the peanut butter kong to Ryder in his crate?
Also do you think if I only let Ryder sleep for two hour periods during the day that he would be more tired at night?

You can definitely give him the kong in his crate. I do it all the time. As soon as my dog sees the kong, she runs into her crate. She gets so excited. It does not throw off her potty schedule at all. My dog has a sensitive stomach, so I put a little canned food in it and then freeze it over night. I've also used peanut butter or pumpkin.

The treat ball wouldn't work in his crate.

Yeah, I have the same problem with my two. Ginny's motto is:

If it's mine it's mine,
if it's yours it's mine,
if I like it is mine,
if I can take it from you it is mine,
if I am playing with something ALL of the pieces are mine,
if I think it is mine it is,
if I saw it first it's mine,
if I had it then put it down it is still mine,
if you had it then you put it down it is now mine,
if it looks like the one I have at home it is mine.

Sadie is such a good big sister, she lets Ginny have everything. I've been really working to try and get Ginny under control and keep her from harassing Sadie so much.

I would definitely give him the Kong in his crate. I crate both of mine when I'm at work and give each one their Kong with a bit of peanut butter. I might also crate Ginny with her Kong and let Sadie be loose with hers.

I suppose theoretically having him sleep less during the day might make him more tired in the evenings, but every dog is different. I'd stick with the routine that is working for you, then crate him with a Kong when you want him to be quiet. I found that covering the crate and making the room dark helps settle a puppy down. I always did this with both of my pups and it always worked. Just like putting a child to bed or down for a nap. :smile2:

They started playing right away together. Maverick played quite ruff, did not hurt puppy, but puppy was scared. At first I thought Maverick was trying to kill him!!!I was in a panic!!!I put Maverick in a down stay when I could finely get him to stop and he was scolded. I phoned the breeder and daycare owner and they laughed...great they are playing. I never saw Maverick play with other dogs like that, not that he played with a tremendous amount of dogs. Since going to daycare and mostly preferring the the big dog group he plays rough. Now this week he lets puppy jump all over him, crawl all over him, bite his neck. When Ryder chases him he always rips out Mavericks hair. He pesters and pesters Maverick to play with him and crawls all over Maverick biting him. They rough house and puppy is always on top. So now when Maverick does some of his rough playing jumping on puppy I am thinking you go for it buddy:) Puppy is less scared, paws in the air playing back.
I will try the PB kong tonight
 
My Bailey was not affectionate at all at that age. She could care less about me. All she wanted to do was play, play, play. She became more affectionate around 6 months old. She still won't lay next to me, but she loves to kiss me and is so excited when I come home from work.

This sounds like my two also. They're always racing around the house, skidding around corners and bouncing off furniture. They love to bite at each other's legs, faces and tails with teeth bared but they never actually make contact with each other. Sadie is much bigger than Ginny, so she'll lie down on the floor so that Ginny can jump on top of her and have a wrestle.

When they play chase with each other, Sadie will often grab Ginny by the tail and send her tumbling. Ginny spends so much time stealing things from Sadie and harassing her, that I always say 'You get her, Sadie.' :smile2:
 
Welcome to the forum. My girl Ember is not a big cuddler and is somewhat aloof and independent. She dislikes playing and games. She has been this way since she was a small puppy atleast 5 weeks. I brought her home at 9 weeks and socialized and socialized her. She is related to my other dogs and from the same breeder. That is just how she is. She is outgoing with people but doesn't make a big fuss. Very regal. I had a hard time bonding to her as she was so indifferent. Thankfully she loves food and would run over her own mother to get it. My other dogs are very outgoing, playful with me, love attention, need to be with me etc. but I would say they still are not big cuddlers. Diva will sleep on my lap from time to time. I raised all my dogs the same way.

BTW what part of SD are you from? I grew up in Rapid City.
