An 'ah ha' moment

What is tunnelers? Is it an agility course with only tunnels, does it have any jumps. Thats what a need for Mr D who is still quite lame and getting worse after hurting himself at a trial a month ago.

Tunnelers is a class in NADAC. There are no jumps, only tunnels. NADAC also has a class called Weavers, that has only weaves, hoops, and tunnels and Hoopers, a class that only has hoops. Since yesterday, I've been doing some more research to see if there is anything else I can get Chinook into. NADAC is the only association that offers classes that do not include jumps.

I think Chinook will love it. You guys just don't know how happy I am for him (and me! - MORE agility!!! and now I don't have to leave Chinook out of all the fun Maia and I have)

I am so far from an expert as to be called dumb :biggrin2: but I would think the rule is there to prevent someone running an injured dog and hurting them further. That does not seem to apply here so...

Ania...what an awesome Video and I am so happy for you with the tunneling, I had not heard of that before and sounds like fun.

I competely get what you mean. I hate having Mr D miss out on agility because he shouldnt be jumping. He just howls and howls when I take Tully out and not him - it breaks my heart. I would definately give tunnelers a go!

I don't think it should be a problem. My instructor signed up her "veteran" dog who's had multiple surgeries on his joints, in hoopers, tunnelers, etc. The non-jumping NADAC courses. He's slow, but overall, you couldn't tell. Heck, last week, he did the dog walk faster than Koji! Just no jumping for him.

First, don't forget to get his NADAC number.
Secondly, when you sign him up, maybe sign him up for Skilled or Veteran. That way, if he starts limping, they'll just assume he's a veteran, older, etc. I dunno.
Lastly, you got the 3 that don't require jumping (hoopers, tunnelers, and weavers).

Is he okay to do weaves? In novice, there's only 6 weaves. But otherwise, he'd enjoy just running and doing the obstacles. If in doubt, you can always write or call them just to be sure. But I think it'd be okay.

Here's Koji's horrible tunnelers run. Tunnelers
It was his first time, so go easy on him. lol.

ETA: If Chinook is okay with contacts - A-frame and dog walk, you can also do Touch N Go.
From NADAC, "Veterans Division - Non-jumping Classes. The Veterans division in the non-jumping classes--Touch N Go, Tunnelers, Hoopers, and Weavers--is open only to Veteran/Disabled handlers. The Veteran/Disabled handler time allowance is to give additional time to handlers because of their age or mobility limitations. Dogs in this division are given the allocated Veterans standard course time, but are placed with the other dogs in the Standard division jump height.

Fro.

Thanks for all the info. I will get him a number, but he's not nearly ready - due to all the Rally and Obedience work we've been doing, he has a hard time staying on my right, so we need to work on that.

I've not trained weaves with him, but will start. I am sure he will be fine with them, I hope.

I am not sure if he can do the contacts. I've heard that it is hard on the dog, so I am not sure if that would be a good thing to put him into.

Well, he's not a veteran - he'll be 2 at the end of May :biggrin2:
and I am not sure what a 'skilled' dog is.

I am sure he will be quite happy with the tunnels and the hoops, the tunnels expecially, as they are his FAVOURITE thing in the world to go through.

I just wanted you to konw that he needed to get a number/registered with NADAC before competing. They're pretty fast about getting a number, so in case you forget, last minute is okay. ;)

The "veteran" standing, I honestly don't know if it's age related, or just that maybe they're injured, etc. And "skilled" just means they jump at a lower height. i.e. Koji's "proficient" height is 16", "skilled" is 12".

I think he'd love hoopers and tunnelers. If not anything more than being able to do things that Maia does. ;) Good luck and enjoy!

The veteran category, in every venue I've seen, has been reserved for older dogs.

This is from NADAC's website:

From: http://www.nadac.com/rules.htm#11

11) How old does my dog have to be to compete in the Veteran’s Division?

The Veterans Division is open to any dog age seven (7) or older. The dog’s age shall be determined by the dog’s actual birthday, or the closest date, as known. Younger dogs may also compete in the Veterans division if their handler enters the trial as a veteran or disabled handler.

A "veteran handler" is defined like this by NADAC's rule book:

From: http://www.nadac.com/exhibitors_handbook.pdf - Page 9

Veteran or Disabled Handler. This applies to any handler age 60 or older, or any handler who has a certificate of disability. The handler’s age shall be determined by any piece of identification with their birth date listed. Handlers with a disability shall present a copy of their disabled parking permit or a letter from their doctor. If a handler wishes to enter any class as a disabled handler, then they must enter all classes and all dogs that they compete with for that weekend as a disabled handler. They may not enter particular classes or a particular dog using the Veteran/Disabled handler status while entering a different dog or different classes in the other divisions.

Good news!

This past weenend, while volunteering at the NADAC trial, I got to speak to the judge about Chinook. She said it would be fine for him to run in tunnelers, weavers, touch'n'go, and hoopers (but we don't have this game here unfortunatley due to not enough hoops)

I am not sure if he will be able to do the touch'n'go or the weaves, but I will try training him and see.

I was thinking, the hoops are easy enough to make. I should find out how many are required for a hoopers class. If it is duable (ie. they don't require 50 or so), I can make them and lend them to the club to use in a trial so Chinook will have an extra class to compete in. I love him so much, and would do anything I could to have him have fun. And I think he would love it.
