I posted a few days ago about taking Hunter to our first ever 'fun match'. Well, another local club was also having a fun match Sunday, I decided to see if our 196.5 was a fluke so we went to this other match. We have never been there before and I thought it would be good exposure for Hunter to make him more reliable in new environments.
We ended up placing 3rd out of 6 dogs with a 190!
We were hit the biggest with the heel-free exercise. I did an about turn, looked down and suddenly had no dog! LOL He got lost on the turn and wandered over to my right side. He joined up with me again just in time for the judge to call a right turn where Hunter decided to go *behind me* and to my right, we lost 7 pts there. I actually thought we would have NQ'd for that but didn't. We had some other minor point deductions for lagging, forging and some poor sits also. This was an eye-opener as I didn't know we needed to work on our off-leash heeling, thank goodness for fun matches that don't 'count'!
Here is our breakdown quickly:
Heel free: -6 pts for the 2 disconnections from the handler (3 pts each time) and 1 pt for lagging and a poor sit (although I'm not sure where)
Heel on leash & fig-8: -2 pts for a poor sit, forging and lagging (Hunter is talented enough to do both! lol)
Recall: -1 pt for another crooked front sit and poor finish (not sure what the judge saw, I thought the finish was fine)
Hunter did amazingly well considering we had never been to this new club (new smells, sounds, dogs etc) and the fact that we sat around for over 3 hrs before we ran! The club website said Novice A would run after Novice B, which started at 9. So, thinking we would run around 9:30 or 10, we showed up at that time! Turns out Novice B wasn't starting until 11, so we sat around until 1:30 before we ran. We were ALL BORED and tired since we got up so early to get there at 9:30. All things considered, we did very well and learned a new area we need to work on.
We also got our first ribbons, a yellow for placing 3rd and a green for the Q! Not bad for our 2nd match!

I also didn't realize that we had the highest score (of 4 dogs) at the fun match on Friday =D So that was kind of like a 1st place lol. There is another fun match at our club on Oct. 11th, we will be going to that and if we do well, I think I will register him for the AKC trial at our club Nov. 1-2. If we do well enough at the real trial we could, potentially, get 2 of 3 CD legs.

I actually have had a sprained ankle for over a week now and ran both runs in an elastic brace. Hopefully I heal before the next match.

Just so proud of my boy, I had to share (again) :biggrin2:
