Anti-anxiety Medication

Sorry to hear all the things you attempted did not seem to help Toby, and you gave it a through going though and did not at first attempt go to medication. Now with that said I do believe that just like in people there is a chemical imbalance that no amount of training would over come. You tried every avenue first with no success. I hope the medication works quickly for him and he can begin to relax and be a dog.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I really feel bad it has effected Ginny, she had a tough year already with the Spinal Stroke. Praying the meds work and things calm down for all your pups.

Ginny didn't have the spinal stroke, Sadie did. But Ginny has always been a bit nervous and high strung and I hate that she's become so anxious. :(

Still haven't heard from the vet. Getting desperate! :(

An Update - and a vent...

I finally got Toby's medication yesterday. She prescribed him Reconcile, which is the doggie form of Prozac.

I had done some reading on drugs such as Prozac to see if it was something I could afford long term. For the most part its fairly cost effective, except that Toby is on a special, dog's only dose, meaning I can't get a generic brand, so its going to cost over $40 per month. :(

I already spend a lot of money on my own health issues each month, since the only treatments that help me are natural and not covered by a drug plan. I'm not sure how I'm going to come up with the money for Toby's treatment. My vet is giving me the pills at cost, I can't even get them cheaper anywhere else. :(

For once I'd like something to go my way!

I'm just so fed up with everything and having trouble staying positive. Both Toby and Ginny peed in the house yesterday, Toby from anxiety and Ginny from hearing Toby's anxious barking.

I'm afraid if I can't get things under control that I'm going to have to give him back to the rescue. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to give him up, but maybe city life isn't for him. He's a different dog when he's away from all the city noises that make him anxious. Maybe he'd do better with a family that lives in a rural area. Toby's behavior is not only driving a wedge between my husband and I, his anxiety is also rubbing off on Sadie and Ginny, which isn't fair to them either.

What a mess.

Please send positive thoughts Toby's way and pray that he gets relief and everything works out!

Oh Melissa!

I am so sorry to hear that you are so frustrated. You have had one hell of a year with your dogs. Try and keep your head up and don't get too stressed out, because that will only make your health worse too. You are a great owner, and I know that any decision you make will be the best for everyone.

Thanks Danielle, that really means a lot.

Yep, sending good thoughts your way. Has the vet given you some time frame for when you might expect some improvement ? Several weeks to a month, perhaps?

Melissa, I wonder if you might want to chat with the rescue people about your situation... They might have some insight as well; and be able to give some thought to a happier, permanent solution for him. I shudder to think that he, Ginny, and you are all under a lot of stress.

The vet said that I may not see a difference for 4-8 weeks. In the mean time she's prescribed him Xanax. She'd said not to give it to him unless we have to, but he's been pretty stressed in the evenings and driving DH and I, Sadie and Ginny crazy. So I've been giving him half a dose each evening. Plus today is garbage day and the garbage trucks always upset him, so I gave him some before I left for work this morning too.

We're going on vacation from July 28th-Aug. 7th to a very remote area so I'm hoping the change in scenery will do him some good, since its city noises that upset him.

I'm hesitant to contact the rescue people. I'd been in contact with Toby's foster Mom before about dealing with his anxiety and she is dead set against medicating him. She doesn't believe that he's as bad as he is. I believe that she saw that he could be nervous but because she lived in a rural area she never saw the extent of his anxiety. His anxiety also didn't get really bad until I'd had him for two months and she only had him for two months.

If we hadn't adopted him she would have kept him. She also said that if things didn't work out with him that she'd taken him. But she also just got a puppy and said she's not taking any rescues right now, so the situation may have changed.

Should I contact the head of rescue instead do you think? The lady I dealt with when I was considering rescuing him?

I really hate the idea of giving him up, but that may be what's best for him if medication doesn't work. My poor Toby guy.
