Anti-anxiety Medication

Melissa, I feel for you, having dog with reactivity is lot of commitment. I know whatever decisions you make they will be based on love and care.
You are mentioning that Toby did not really develop his anxiety full blown until 2 months after living at your place. That sounds interesting and you really might be onto something that living rural life was something that fit him better than busy city life. Some dogs specially with strong herding drive are like that.
Best wishes and calm and happy vacation!

I broke down and called the sheltie rescue where Toby came from, to let them know what's going on. They made me feel MUCH better and were so supportive. They totally understood where I was coming from and are completely fine with me medicating Toby. They're also arranging a consult with a behaviorist, to see if she can offer me some more insight on how to handle Toby's issues.

I'm not positive, but Toby seems like he may be a little bit better. I took him down the street to a friends and he seemed less uptight. He did bark at a few sounds but was able to recover from a startle quicker than usual.

Ginny however, is a nervous wreck. She's been acting so bizarrely that I wasn't even sure what was going on with her. What I'm pretty sure happened is that she was stung by a bee in the paw while playing in my friends yard. Its traumatized her so badly that she won't play inside our outside of the house, is terrified to walk on grass and panics at the sight of my friend and her dog. Ginny actually saw them, panicked, bolted out the gate and ran full tilt down the street all the way home. Poor little thing was shaking like a leaf. I don't have the slightest clue how to deal with this. :(

Toby handled the outing WAY better than Ginny did, which is kind of good, yet at the same time SO frustrating. I feel like such a bad Mom. :(

If frustrating gave off energy and could be bottled I'm positive that mine would be a great power source!

I'm glad that Toby is coming around. Hopefully the medication is helping him. Sounds like you did the right thing by contacting the rescue and I'm very happy they were supportive.

I hope Toby continues to improve and that Ginny forgets about the bee sting.

What she said

Don't get too down on yourself, Melissa. You are doing so much for your pups--they are lucky to have you to help them work through their issues.

You a bad mom NEVER. I just read the whole thread about Sadie and you are a wonderful mom to your fur babies. What a recovery for Sadie thanks to you. I am glad you contacted the rescue about Toby. It is good to get their support and advice. I know your decision about Toby will be the right one for everyone involved. If it was me In your shoes I would probably take Toby's anti anxiety meds. Just kidding I think. I admire your strength and love for your fur babies. Get a good nights sleep and I hope you can relax a little.

LOL! I think I told my Mom the same thing the other day, that if it got any worse I was going to have to start taking Toby's Xanax. (j/k)

Took Toby for a couple of short walks tonight and he did really well. He seemed much less jittery and when he did get scared and bark he didn't fixate or stay upset, he got over it quickly.

But Ginny is a nervous wreck. I'm still not sure if she was stung by a bee or if this was just going to happen, but I honestly think she's had a nervous breakdown due to Toby's anxiety. She was always a bit nervous but Toby's anxiety has been slowly ramping up her anxiety.

When she leaves our front or back porch she's completely terrified of...nothing, everything. She's scaring herself, shaking, jumping, panting heavily and swinging her head around constantly. She's come completely unhinged, had a complete mental breakdown. :(

Maybe Ginny needs the meds now. I feel so sorry for her. If it's not one thing it's another. Maybe everybody needs the anti anxiety meds now except for Toby who drove everyone crazy. Just kidding. I am at a loss for words.

Its sad but true. I'm going to talk to my vet about Ginny tomorrow, I think she could use something for a few days. I'd already told her that Toby's anxiety was affecting Ginny in a big way when I took Toby to see her, so it won't be a big shocker.

Its a miracle that Sadie isn't losing her mind too!

Oh my goodness, my heart is breaking for you. I can't imagine going through all you have in the last year with your dogs. You are a wonderful doggie mom, so please don't ever think differently. I was in awe of the way you handled Sadie's stroke and recovery.

Do you think perhaps Ginny is reacting to your anxiety? Maybe if the meds work for Toby and you get to calm down, Ginny will too. I know that Meggie is very in tune with my emotions. And I know there have been jokes about you taking some anti-anxiety, but I'd consider it seriously if I were you.

Being a dog rescuer myself, I know that I would feel very badly if I had to put a dog back into rescue, but you cannot beat yourself up if that is the decision you have to make. Honestly, if your home is not the right place for him then it would be in his best interests to be rehomed. And probably in Ginny's as well. I'm not saying you should give up, just that if the final outcome is that Toby be returned to rescue, you can do so knowing you did everything possible to prevent it and that it simply didn't work out to be in every bodies best interest to keep him.

I wish you all the best.
