Anti-Cuddler?

You know I was rereading this thread and suddenly thought(during Cheryl's post regarding Koji) that the sheltie need to be near you but not on you was something I really about them. I guess it is because I am not all that touchy feely either and really have not felt bad about them not wanting to cuddle.

I am one of those people who can not stand(at all) Goldens because they all seem to have this overwhelming need to sit on you even if they don't know you. It is truely annoying to me.:lol:

I never thought of that. But you're right. As much as I love Koji being cuddly a lot of times, I'm like, "go away, sheesh dog, why you gotta lie ON me?" LOL. But then, there are times when he will come lie between my legs and I'm like, "awww...I'm loved". When Miko lies next to me, I just pet him because he rarely does that anymore. I think I fidget too much for his liking.

But yes, I don't want a dog to sit on me any time I present my lap. lol.

I think these dogs were on here last night reading this thread. Last night when I went to bed, Justice jumps up on the left side and puts his head on my chest, Diva jumps up on the right and lays her head on my stomach and Ember jumps up and lays between my legs and puts her head on my lower leg. Geez, you all are smothering me! But then I thought Aw, they love me.:smile2:

LMAO!! And this coming from the dogs that aren't cuddly, right? Well, minus Diva. I love it.

too funny:lol:

I think we kind of taught Buffy to be cuddly. We did a lot of cuddling with her as a puppy and initially she didn't love it but now she was a champ. She got much better at it when I was home sick for a few weeks last year.

Another thing that helps is NILIF, I think. I did that—working breakfast and she had to do stuff for all her food—when I was working at home for a while. Made a positive difference in her attention level to me, I think.

re; cuddling (or not)

Shelties seem to be a strange breed that way. Joy (my soul mate) will cuddle VERY rarely & only with me. She likes to lay down in the other room & keep an eye on my wife & I. Gage (my wifes soul mate) used to cuddle all the time, now he lays on the floor or out in the living room (when Debbie is gone) -I think he might be a little depressed since we got the puppy -he feels a little left out. Every now & then he will cuddle with me. Tyke (mr. perfect pup)is not a cuddler at all -he likes to have his head scratched -when we stop -he moves to the far end of the couch. Jack (the puppy, now 17 mos old) loves to cuddle -but I think it's more out of fear/protection issues rather than wanting to cuddle for love. He seems like he is going to be an independent cuss when he finally grows up (Jack is about 5 mos behind in his maturity) but, on a positive note -we took him to the new vet the other day for his shots & nose spray, afraid we would need a muzzle (the last vet muzzled him)& he was the perfect gentleman. The vet & staff couldn't say enough nice thiings about him (they had communicated with previous vet), of course, I'm sure it helped that both Debbie & I were there to hold him & comfort him (he just LOVES Debbie, my wife).

Thank you for this topic! I've been feeling sad about Julip not being all over me! We've just had her 2 months (she's 4 months) & she IS near us all the time, sleeping by my feet now! But not a big cuddle bug ... yet - here's hoping!

I'm used to having a Shih Tzu for 16 years - the ultimate cuddlier! So having a dog that doesn't NEED to be ON me, was upsetting me. Reading this has helped.

Julip does have an amazing personality, she adores strangers! We bring her lots of places and she's in the spot light everywhere (plus she's a gorgeous blue merle! :biggrin2:) which attracts people to her, just to find out WHAT she is!?

At Pet Valu pet appreciation day on Sat. I had a woman with a Sheltie there, say Julip would make a wonderful Pet Therapy dog, she even said she wished her Sheltie had Julip's personality! :wink2: So I know we have lucked out with her temperament!

She does sleep in bed with us, while I'd be fine sharing my pillow with her, she prefers our feet. (Hubby is happy about this!)

She will lay on the couch with me, but I currently put her up there (she can't jump up on her own yet) she will stay when she's zonked out and crashes.

I know she adores us, it's ME, who NEEDS the extra attention! :smile2:

One thing that is good about it, is she isn't having separation anxiety issues & I'm home with her during the day, so she often is NOT left alone, so its huge that she is OK with us being away. I was worried about it being a problem, her having me around TOO much & relying on me.

Glad it's not just mine

My Charlie is almost 14 weeks old now, and he does not want to be held or pet or scratched. He wants you to play with him and he will lay up against me when he is chewing on one of his toys, but don't touch him or he will move! I was sad thinking that he may not really like me that much because he didn't want to sit in my lap or cuddle or anything. I am glad to know it's not just my pup. It is strange because he has to be right with me all of the time, but wants no personal attention other than "throw my ball" or throwing one of his toys for him to fetch.

You're definitely not alone. BTW, when Koji was younger, he was just like your Charlie. Now, it'd be nice if Koji wouldn't lay ON me. lol. I think he may (or may not) change as he gets older. Koji didn't get cuddly until he was about 2 or 3.
