Does anyone know if Shelties can swim? Or if they even like to?

Some do!
Mine will go chest high in the pond at our local Dog Park, but not swim - yet anyhow. I've read that dogs who have CH. Cherden's Sock It To Em (Pow) in their lines tend to be the water loving dogs, Hunter traces back to him so I believe it!
I guess Pow also had a habit of doing what they called "pogo-ing" where he just jumped straight off the ground, into the air repeatedly. AND, he was a bubble blower in his water dish.
Hunter does those too
So if your Sheltie has those traits, you might find Pow in his/her pedigree!

Mine love to go to the stream and drink -- but swim? Oh, my, no! All dogs can swim; Layla got her chance last summer when we went kayaking on the Pocomoke River. She was on the prow, skylarking around. I knew it was just a matter of time until PLOP! In she went! Boy did she look surprised! 
She fell in two more times before she figured out that she'd better just lie quiety and enjoy the ride.

When Hunter was a pup, I introduced him to swimming in the lake at our cabin so he wouldn't panic if he ever fell off the dock. I either went in with him or leaned over the dock and held him in the water until he got comfortable, then I guided him to the shore, so he would know where to head to exit the lake safely.

Technically I think the answer is yes, they can swim, but no, they (generally) don't like it.
I tell people who can't understand why this breed doesn't like the water, is that it's like you trying to swim in a wool body sweater.
Shelties are a breed that definitely should be supervised closely & wear a life jacket when in or around the water. They tend to tire quickly.

water is fun!!
Gavin loves streams and lakes. He will jump right into a lake if I'm in it
We were at the beach last year and he ran after a ball. I was concerned he couldn't swim well, but he did fine. I do think current is an issue though, because once when stream crossing he got skittish when there was a current more significant than slow moving water. And he doesn't like the waves hitting the beach.
So I think My boy loves water, when it isn't moving!

Not Sure Yet
Sadie hasn't had the opportunity to try swimming yet. She seems to enjoy playing with/in water and tries to bite the stream of water coming from the hose. I'll encourage her to try swimming in the summer, but I'm guessing she won't like it. My parent's sheltie was the same, loved playing it water but hated swimming. All that fur weighed him down.
I did see some clips of shelties swimming on YouTube, which surprised me. They even seemed to be enjoying it!

Treader's never been around water yet, except during a bath. Onthe last day that they are open, our water park here lets dogs come in and have fun with their humans. But we couldn't go with Treader last year because it was on a Sunday and we had to go to church. Maybe this year.
