I was speaking with a friend who does only herding, and she said it wasn't worth the drive to only do one trial. Too bad.

And that seems to be part of the problem with Nationals. They'd probably get more entries if they offered 2 day Performance trials. There has to be a way to do it successfully if they really wanted to invest in it.

I had kinda sorta hoped that we would have our weaves ready and enter the agility novice class as our first time, but that doesn't look like it will be happening. We are progressing nicely but weaves in new locations haven't been tested and he's only about 70% at class So we will wait till September and try at our local sheltie specialty sheltie trial

Sounds like it's one of those situations where less people enter because it's not worth the trip for only 1 day, so the performance trials don't fill. At the same time, the organizers are thinking, "no point in increasing performance trials to two days because we can't even fill a 1-day trial."

No sheep trial classes, but ducks/cattle trial classes and all the test classes. It's filling fast!
We are also offering two Instinct Tests on Friday (ASSA inexplicably decided to not to offer them). So people coming for agility can come for Instinct on Friday, hang out on Saturday, and do agility on Sunday.

This is literally the ONLY club I know that does it this way. Every other club in the country has figured out how to milk the cash cow that is agility.

Just for education's sake, I checked out the premiums for last year's Cocker national...
THREE separate Cockers-only Obedience and Rally trials over three days
(plus a Rally/Obedience match)
FOUR separate Agility trials over four days
(one trial Cockers-only)
In addition to the thrill of possibly finishing a title at your breed's National, they also offered special awards (eg. the highest-scoring Agility Cocker over the four trials, highest scoring ILP Cocker, etc.). What fun!
As you may imagine, the entries were great... and while Cockers seem fairly popular as Agility/Obedience dogs, they aren't synonymous with high-level performance the way Shelties are.
I am in no position to tell anyone how to plan their National, but I do scratch my head. ASSA is a great parent club and I bet they can do better (and reap the rewards).

And those agility trials would be the cash cow that helps cover the expense of the rest of their National while giving performance exhibitors a reason to show up. It's a really simple equation that seems to go right over the head of our parent club.

So we won't be going to ASSA Nationals...but Enzo will!
Long story short, our trainer will be watching him that weekend and she is going to take him. I'm hoping he can meet up with his breeder while he's there!
