Asta may have kidney infection

SIGH. Asta has been down with what we thought was a UTI. Antibiotics were helping but after she was done with them, the symptoms crept back. My wonderful vet was worried about kidney stones, since Saturday afternoon she had blood in the urine drops on her feathers. So she went in this AM for more tests.

Good news is, no bladder stones, no bladder thickening, nothing seen abnormal on xray or ultrasound. He even scoped her vagina (!!) just in case, also OK other than irritated. She is still drinking lots, peeing lots and of course has dilute urine. Another urine culture has been sent off, even tho the first one was negative. He said her urine was so dilute, it may not show anything again, but we have to try and isolate an organism if we can. So now she is on a different antibiotic and may have to stay on it for a month.

Poor girl and poor us - so hard not knowing what you are up against. Luckily all else is normal, blood work, her appetite and activity level. Grrrrr, I hate the mystery of this.

Not to mention the expense!!! But of course we will do all that is necessary.
Would appreciate you all keeping Asta in your thoughts/prayers. I love my big girl.

Sharon, I'm sorry to hear that you guys still haven't been able to figure out what's happening with Asta. At least you've been able to eliminate things.

Know that I am thinking about you and your girls!

I'm so sorry that Asta is still not recovered. Hope everything turns out simple and soon.

So sorry to hear that Asta' is going through all this.
Our prayers are with you, and hoping they find out that there is nothing too seriously wrong with the little girl.

Thanks, all. So hard to see them having illnesses. Although she isn't moping around or anything so that's easier on me.

Hoping the new antibiotics do the trick, but after reading up on it, I've decided to start the coconut oil. Got the TJ's organic one. It claims to help fight bacteria, so maybe it will help in this case. I don't think it can hurt! We'll see.

Bailey has had bladder issues since she was a puppy. I give her a tiny, tiny pinch of D'Mannose powder. It is supposed to help flush out bacteria. She also gets coconut oil.

I hope Asta feels better!

Update!

Well, we finally did get a result from Asta's urine culture, E. Coli was present. Luckily, it's not some horrible resistant bacteria. She seems to be improving on Baytril, the new antibiotic. Don't know why the first round of the other antibiotic didn't clear it up but I guess if it's in her kidney it takes a longer course.

I'm so thankful that's all it is, too bad the first culture didn't show it, could have saved Asta a lot of tests.

She'll be on this regimen for a month and then hopefully, we can close the chapter on this! PHEW!

So, in a month, hopefully I can schedule the carpet cleaners and be safe!!!
