Thinking about size again - anyone has both Hurtta and BOT coat? I'm asking because my dog has Hurtta 40 (40 cm) but I've read BOT isn't necessarily same. Lot of ppl complained that BOT was too big even though they measured their dogs from shoulders (behind the neck) to tail. Hurtta is kind of tight for my dog and little short at the tail (would be ok for him to have it like 2-3cm longer) but it seems getting BOT 43 could be mistake since people generally say it's bigger than they expected.

Lexi has 40 BoT and a 36 Hurtta. The Hurtta is a little short to the tail, and the BoT a little loose. We originally got her the 43 BoT and it was way too big.

From that logic you having 36 Hurtta and 40 BOT, it seems I should get him 43 BOT since he's got 40 Hurtta that is also little short to the tail. Decisions, decisions.....

Good news! I actually found person who has BOT mesh and standard for her sheltie and she's coming to the same trial in May, so I asked her if she could take BOT blankets with her, so we could try it on. She said she's got size 40 which is perfect, too because I'll see if it fits or if he needs bigger/smaller one.

I was going to suggest telling us your dogs height, weight, length and maybe we could help, but having one in person will be better.

Hi .... I'm back for further discussion.

Over the weekend we had a chance to try out BOT mesh blanket size 40. It was perfect fit and looked pretty well on my sheltie. Though PROBLEM.... few people were trying to convince me that it can't work for sheltie with such a long coat. One of my friend said that he would strongly advise against mesh..... BUT the problem is that I don't feel like getting standard one, especially because my dog has coat to keep him warm. I feel like I'd like to keep BOT on before trials or training and maybe sometimes over the night, too. But he can't have standard over the night when he's inside - at least I think it would be too much for him. So my question is - how does it really work with long coated breeds and can mesh work as well as standard?

I have the mesh BOT jacket, as do many of the local Sheltie owners who use BOT jackets SPECIFICALLY because it's a little lighter than the standard one with the Sheltie's double coat.

The ONLY time I use mine is at agility trials because we are going from either an air conditioned building to the hot outside or a heated building to a cold outside. With the air conditioning there is also the consideration that we've gotten our dogs warmed up from running and then they lay in their crate in colder air until the next run. As they age, that isn't going to be good for muscles or joints.

Neither of my dogs, nor any of the other Shelties I know who use BOT, have had any issues with the mesh jackets not working or being "too much" for them.

Thanks I'm happy for every feedback. He said mesh wouldn't be enough effective because it's too thin and light, but I don't think many sheltie owners would be using it if it was the case. Plus as I said I think standard is good maybe for winter trials but not to wear in summer and around the house.

Reading about the way it's supposed to work I would think mesh should work just the same as standard with standard being more 'outside' blanket. Is my logic right?
(And I'm thinking that I could put mesh under my Hurtta raincoat in case of need. If weather was bad.....)

That's what I do. In the winter the Hurtta goes on top.

Honestly, I only purchased the mesh one because the Sheltie's double coat is supposed to help regulate their body heat regardless of the weather. My concern with going with the standard jacket was that it would not allow the dog's natural coat to work properly.

Yes, my understanding from the website is both the standard and mesh work the same way. It's the other reason I opted for the mesh over the standard. If they are designed to work the same, then why go for something heavier when it isn't necessary.

And yes, there's no reason you couldn't put the raincoat on over it in bad weather.

Thanks a lot to both of you. Yea, I guess I'll stick with mesh. It looked so well on him and fit perfectly. Also as you said it seems so light and I like that. I feel like mesh is pretty good for shelties. From what I've read there should be no problem with the coat, but some people threw me a bit off telling me it won't work too well on longer coat.
