Bacterial Infection

Tea rinse

Ann the tea rinse is so nice, her fur shines and she smells so good. We got some maleseb that another formum was raving about and that is helping so much also. I will stay with the tea as well, I love the tea and she loves licking the tea fur.

We have an ongoing cat population that people will not or can not keep controlled. I have talked to the SPCA and they are supposedly taking care of this issue with cats. I mention this because during one of Harper's baths yesterday we found two fleas, albeit dead fleas. I just know that with the combo of warm not freezing weather and the darn roaming cats that the combination is causing problems for her.

Why is it that some people think it is okay to let cats roam at will? Do they think less of them as pets? These cats deserve a good life also, but lately, there are more and more. It makes me angry/sad. But when I think of the disease they can spread, I shudder for my sheltie.

Our SPCA is having a low cost spay/neuter cat clinic day. I do hope that some take advantage of this.

I am not used to rural living, came to this, sleepy bayside town a couple of years back but I was not prepared for Catville USA. I wish that people would do the right thing.

My Danny Boy has had skin problems his whole life. He gets better for awhile and than has another flareup. He has allergies to dust mites and cedar like shrubs. I have a closet full of different shampoos. Sometimes he needs antibiotics and anti itch medicine. He did get fleas once when he caught a rabbit and brought it in the house as a present for me. It survived. I know what you mean about the cats. Many could be feral though.

Infection

Kate i took Max to the vet today because his scratching got really bad and he also had an odor again. Well he has a staph infection? I don 't know how he got it because he hates the grass and outside. I also take him to the boardwalk everyday. But the good new is that the scratching was from his allergies, so maybe in a few months he will be doing better. Maube its in the air in jersey! Just watch that temarol, max was on that for his allergies and then he wound up with pancreatitus attack, please watch those steriods.

OTE=famous seamus;205270]Harper Lee's itching is caused by a bacterial infection. A very difficult to find infection. To all of you out there who have written about itching scratching doggies, consider this information.

She has no real signs except for her insane scratching and a few flakey spots on her skin. No redness, no swelling but an infection just the same. It could have been caused by her last bout with fleas, which are all gone now. It is just difficult to tell.

She is on Temaril, Baytrel and Omega supplements. The vet will waive her rabies right now til her skin is cleared and if her titre comes back high enough he will write the proper letter to the state so she can forego the vaccine.

He also said that it seems to him that her thyroid takes a dip near the winter season even though she is on soloxine. I don't know and he doesn't know why that might be. Her thyroid panel results will be in tomorrow.

Any ideas out there in sheltie land?

Our wallets are lighter,
but our spirits soar.

I know what you mean, Kate. We're rural too and I get very frustrated at cats roaming through our yard, poaching at my bird feeders and making my dogs nuts. But a dog without a license is illegal. What about cats? It doesn't make any sense.

I'm glad the tea rinse is helping Harper Lee! Tea is good for so many things, they're discovering. As far as I'm concerned, give me tea and chocolate and that's my cure for most things. Well, sometimes wine too....

Kate I am so sorry to hear Harper Lee is dealing with skin issues again. I know what a battle they can be. I'll be praying she gets some relief soon. Hugs to you both.

Yes Lynell, I am with you about steroids. I really do dislike using them for anything on my dogs. It seems to be the 'go to' solution for many vets, not all but many.

In future I am going to try homeopathic ways to mend any skin issues that may occur.

As I said, the maleseb is working, twice a week to begin with and then as maintenance for awhile and then as necessary. The green tea is so soothing also.

How is your little one? Do you ever walk on the beach? Harper loves the sea at Wildwood and the Bay however, we are wary of populated beaches and the unfortunate illness' that can result especially in the spring/summer months. Just my opinion.

Oh yes Ann, my kingdom for some chocolate!!! Wine isn't too shabby either.

Kate you are right about the beach, you may recall I had written to you prior to my moving to Myrtle Beach and I was very disappointed because Gypsy's Dermatologist said we should not take her to the beach because there is too much bacteria and it could only create more problems for her skin issues. It was a big NO!

Hang in ther my friend.

Kate i only take max on the boardwalk, afraid of fleas and other issues with the sand. Max doesn't seem to want it either. I do have that shampoo on my list, right now we need an anti fungal which we have, but i'd like to do the tea rinse. What do you use Kate?
I to believe in homopathic and have supplemnts here, and so does my new vet, i feel like you i want to eventually use homopathic supplements only. I use a woman in california recommended by sheltie rescue people. I do like her. Good thoughts going your way for you and your pup. :)

lynnel, I use green tea, plain old green tea. Steep it for couple minutes and let it cool down. Harper loves it warmly going over her girlish figure.

Yes Dawn, I remember concurring about the sand and hidden dangers that it holds for our dogs. Any public place puts pups at risk but the beach is a huge hazard and not just for pets either. That darn norovirus is here in Jersey, showed up yesterday at the college where Steve works. Why oh why can't people learn to wash their hands!!!!!!! So many virus' could be avoided that way. Argh.

Love
Kate

You know i never thought about the cats but since taking down the old fence and putting leland cypress trees on the open side i do notice a lot of cats roaming through our yard. I used to feel so sad when it was all fenced because he wouldn't go out nor stay out without me, but now i'm glad. He gets enuf issues. Here i thought it might be the people or kids petting him on the boardwalk. Max really likes the attention so i was going to bring wipes with me so they could wipe there hands first ! I know i' m nuts! Lol
