Baker - Should I be worried?

Wondering why Baker picked today to be the day he needs to outside every 15 minutes...it's raining like crazy! I'm trying to hold the umbrella over both of us & also be able to see if anything is coming out of him. Sure glad the neighbors can't see into our back yard - I can imagine how we look.

This last time I thought he had peed, and then he ran over to try to lay in a puddle. I scooped him up & came inside, dried him off, put him down, turned around & he peed. :gaah I know - I was supposed to take him outside, but I just couldn't. We're soaked.

Hubby dug out his golf umbrella, so it should get a little easier going forward.

I did get some Pedialite down him, so hope that helps. I didn't realize they make an unflavored version. I was sitting here wondering what "Gatorade" flavor hubby would come home with. He did good.

He played a little tugging with his favorite hedgehog - that makes me less worried. But he's not playing as "fiercely" as normal. He's napping again. I'm going to mix up the rice when he wakes up. I would think he must be hungry, but maybe not with an upset tummy.

Thanks for the replies to my concern for Baker. I am SO GLAD to have you guys to turn to - just didn't think it would be an issue like this in the first week...

I did baby food for Gavin when he had tummy upsets.....and I made chicken broth for him from the cubes. Sounds like you are on the right track and good luck with your baby :D

Just getting to this thread and so sorry to hear that wee Baker is not feeling up to par. Hopefully this is just an upset that will resolve, but even though you had a fecal sample tested at the vet's, if the diarrhea doesn't resolve soon I would definitely have a second sample tested...flotation.

Also, as I am sure you know, a tiny pup can dehydrate fast with diarrhea and vomiting...try to get him to drink extra if you can.

Hugs for Baker...

Cara - thanks so much for the get well card - I will have to see if I can print that & put it in his scrapbook.

After his last nap we went out in the rain again (huge umbrella helps) and he peed. Came back in & I syringed some more Pedialite into him. He takes the first 1 1/2 doses pretty good, starts to get upset after that. They are 2 tsp per syringe. I feel so bad forcing this on him, but I know he will feel better hydrated..

Sure wish he could understand that I am only trying to help him when I have him & the syringe in my arms. I was crying tonight while doing it because it brought back memories of Trace's short week of getting sick to passing away, and me forcing him to take pills, eat something...

I mixed up the baby rice cereal per the vet's instructions - he took two sips & turned away. But he did seem interested in his puppy food. He ate a few pieces, ate a few more that I hand-fed him. Since he lost all his breakfast I figured he needed a little more in his tummy so I syringed 4 tsp of the rice mixture into him.

Outside again for a good pee & a tiny bit of poop that had 2 navy bean sized pieces - better than watery.

Baker is not a happy camper. I think I will find him on the internet tonight trying to find a Greyhound bus back to his home...

I'm just seeing this too...so sorry Baker isn't feeling well! Coccidia is so common among puppies that it certainly could be that. It's great that you were able to talk to your vet. Will he run another fecal for you Monday just to recheck? Pixie had terrible coccidia as a puppy and I know how sick it can make them.

One other thing...it might not be easy, but can you take his temperature? A regular digital thermometer is fine to use but you'll probably need hubby to hold him. If his temp is above 102, you'll want to call your vet again.

Don't force it if he doesn't want to eat. Just keep the fluids in him for now. Once he's feeling better, he'll want to eat again. I agree that baby food (chicken or turkey in the little jars) is the best thing to start him with, and you can mix some in with the rice cereal to make it more tasty.

Good luck and pats to little Baker!!

Thanks - vet had me check his gums to make sure they were "slippery, not tacky". they seem fine. We have what we need to take his temp if needed - I'll see how he is after his latest nap.

The Pedialite seems to be more tolerated than the rice cereal, so I may just stick with that the rest of the night.

IF he wants to eat some of his puppy food is that OK?

I wouldn't feed him puppy food if he's vomiting. And it's also a better idea to keep him on bland food for as long as he has the runs. If you want to get some food into him, use the rice baby food mixed with a bit of meat flavored baby food. I wouldn't feed him anything but that until his poops are normal again. His gastro system needs enough time to settle down without having to digest regular food.

Thanks Ann,

He hasn't vomited since before noon, When I had him out the last time he seemed "almost" his normal perky, happy self.

Hoping tomorrow is a better day.

Going to post a pic on his "Baker says hello" thread

Oh ack--when they are that tiny and sick it's gut wrenching. Hoping he's over the hump and on his way back!
