Bark Collars

I guess I have been lucky with Liam as he WILL respond to the QUIET command. If he does get worked up I will crate him from time to time but really not that often. How old? Liam is just over 2-1/2 and he understands the NO BARK and QUIET command. Just curious, do you always make sure the barking stops after the command? For my training with all of my shelties, I will reinforce and repeat the words and get them to sit and focus on me. Does distracting with a treat after the command work for you. Thank goodness they don't bark in the backyard unless they are playing frisbee. I guess I have been lucky to have several older dogs to help teach Liam the ropes.

Luna is 2 1/2 years old. I started puppy training with her at 11 weeks. She has been through puppy, group, private and board and train sessions for much of her life. I've had Shelties my whole life and she is the absolute smartest and most vocal I've ever had. I train with her almost every day on quiet, enough, place, heel, "get the....(specific toy), playing basketball where she gets a ball I toss and puts it in a tiny basketball hoop, does tunnels, poles, jumps, etc, and we hike daily. We live on three acres with horses where she gets PLENTY of time to run free. Still she barks and barks and barks whenever she sees a bird, a squirrel, the barn cat, the horses (which she has seen every day of her life). How do you reinforce stopping the barking? I'd love some insight on this because she will stop long enough to quiet down and get a treat, but then start up again.
 
I have Brodie trained to 'NO BARK' but Kooper, yeah - he's the trouble maker in our house. Being deaf, he doesn't respond to anything except if I walk up to him and shake my finger in his face with a 'NO,NO,NO' that is more for me than him since he can't hear it and he couldn't care less anyway. Any training, regardless of what it is, is a constant, never ending thing. I do believe if behavior is bad enough, a trainer should be brought in. They can quickly identify issues and suggest solutions.
 
Funny that we all talk about our breed being 'barkers'. Yes herding breeds bark more than retrievers and setters, but I don't think Shelties bark any more than these other breeds. I am surrounded by barking dogs atm. On one side is a cavalier, on the other side is a standard poodle, and now the cow over the back has a cattle dog puppy that barks from 6am until dusk. Over the road is barking bull breed x kelpie and over the back of that another large mix breed, next door to them is a barking small dog and over from them is a barking lab.

And yes, Della does bark (although she is debarked) but that little dog wasn't socialised or ever walked. Kismet and Tully only bark when playing and usually only if Della is involved. Poor Kismet is being barked at every time we go in the backyard and she's now starting to learn bad lessons. Poor Deska I used to get angry with him for barking, but he never barked insanely like these neighbour dogs, and his barking was linked to pain.

Sitting here listening to Oreo barking outside and Chloe inside. Bark bark bark.....definitely the life of a Sheltie owner. But they are such “good”
Dogs. I would take the barking anyday.
 
We personally used a citronella dog bark collar with great success. Worked on nuisance barking when in a barking war with dog next door. Didn’t stop protective barking against gas man, which was fine. We used it for about 12 mths worked great. Still have dog and behaviour never reverted.
