Barking Miracle Cure?

I don't want to get too off-topic, but I heartily disagree with the argument that dogs who bark haven't been taught otherwise, or that it is 100% a question of training or persistence on the owner's part.

A statement that doesn't consider nature (genetics) and only thinks of nurture (training) is doing a disservice to the dog and to the breeders who work hard to select for certain traits (like less barking).

I just read your response, and I still don't understand what you are saying?

My stance on thie issue of working with my dogs, exposing them to all of these things that would set off another dog,is my way of teaching manners. There is a time & place for barking. And overall harmony of my home. What I consider harmony & quiet, may not be someone elses norm for thier home.

One has to sleep,we sleep during day times, and these guys are used to the routine.Brian has worked 3rd shift since we got married, even back in the day with Earnhardt,he was taught to hush. It can be a learned behavior.

It is what it is. I understand the genetics of shelties, and barking is a trait, but over the top barking, and living in a home with multiples that are out of control with barking over silly things,it can be controlled.

I have one dog is reactive, the other is not. I mean reactive,to moving things. He is constantly on alert. The other is about as laid back as it gets.
But even in Jasper's wildest moments,he can be hushed from barking, and he listens, becuase he knows it is not acceptable. He might grumble,as he always has to have the last word, but the barkfest stops.

I just do not tolerate it.I don't scream at the top of my lungs to be heard. It simply is a hand motion, they know what it means, but its been taught from an early age.
I'm not discrediting anyone, everyone has thier ways of living with thier dogs,be it one or be it 5-6-7 etc...but I feel for our home, when I need it quiet,it needs to be quiet. We all have our ways. Shelties are shelties, they bark. But it can be controlled, with consistancy, patience, compassion.

I have 4...and I do not have the barking. I actually should not count Mia,as she only barks if she needs potty,or if she really is in need of something. (blind & deaf)

The other 3,they simply do not bark at these things that every here talks about.
They don't bark, because it is how they have been trained from day one. They have learned to hush. Blake being the youngest here, has simply learned what my finger on my mouth means. It means to hush.
I used to say "hush"..now all I need to do if I am in eye sight of any of them is raise my finger to my lips.

Now,they do bark if someone comes to the door, they do bark if someone drives in the yard,BUT they know when to can the noise.

I say that in no way being mean, but I cannot, nor do I stand for a situation that only escalates itself by ONE dog being a ring leader. Cause they will all follow suit, and think "gee I guess I'll bark". Nip it in the bud,and be firm about it.

I have been in my share of homes, with multiple dogs, and it is total mayhem. Unacceptable in my book.
If you take on the job of multiples, than they need to be taught what is acceptable behavior.
And in my home, ridiculous barking over a hair dryer, pulling tissues from a box, garbage bags, vacume cleaners...gosh the list is endless. I simply do not have the behavior. I can run the vacume with the 3 boys in this living room, and they will not bark.

One barks..it gets louder, and next thing ya have is an uncontrolled household,an your voice cannot scream loud enough to shut them up. My dogs are inside all day,we sleep during day hours,as we both work 3rd shift. These dogs would not dream to have a bark fest, becaase they know better.

How I wish my dog would just SHUT UP:lol:! When the only dog I had was F-kap it was almost always quiet. If he did start to bark without reason all I would have to do is say 'F-kap! Hush.' if he was in front of me or knock on the back door when he was outside. I have maneged to get Jody and my mom's sheltie, Sarah, to do the same, but Ida, OHHHHH, she drives me nuts! I can't make her stop for anything! No matter how many times I told my dad not to get her barking as a young pup he would get carried away with playing with and spoiling her:rolleyes2:!

Lucky barks outside, he loves to bark at the squirrels. Ok I will accept that.

Lil' Lady barks inside the house, miss little radar ears. I am working on her still to stop her demands, along with stomping her feet to get what she wants. I am her work in progress. The stomping her two front paws is what gets me. The Royal Highness.

A big NO usually works around here.

Ok, going back to my original thread....

I was asked by k9creationz (sp???) as to how this product works.

Its a remote handheld ultrasonic device. When the dog does a behaviour that you don't like, you press the Negative button. It emits a sound that is an attention grabber to the dog. It does not work for all dogs. As I mentioned earlier, Bacca just ignores it. But he is not my barking fiend anyway. When the dog stops the behaviour you press the Positive button, or preferably you reward with traditional positive reinforcement. Treats and Praise!

I cannot believe the change in Indy since I started using it.

I started indoors first when he would bark every time the printer started up. Now he only goes on alert.

Just last week I started it when he was outdoors and patrolling the yard looking for dogs passing by. I could not believe when the standard poodle walked by and he just lay on the deck watching. Before this, he would have been screaming up and down the property line. It took only 3 or 4 presses. Now if hestarts to bark, I only have to say his name....and he stops.

I have not tried it yet with crazy behaviour over doorbells or suppertime, but that's coming soon.

The stomping of the paws got me, it is Mia's way of getting attention. Or if she is initiating play with one of the boys, she stomps her feet. She is also the Royal queen here..:smile2:

That is a riot that Mia does that also. I wonder how many shelties do this on the board, or is it a girl thing.

I have a question for BarbV or anyone who has used an ultrasonic training device and also has multiple dogs in your home. When you use the device to address some behavior of one of the dogs, what effect does the device have on the other dog that isn't currently displaying the behavior you are trying to change?

No, it's not a girl thing:biggrin2:! Or at least I HOPE it's not:uhoh:!? Jody does it to! And yes he's a boy Jody.

Technically, she did post the name of it.. it was just well disguised. It's called Petsafe Collarless Ultrasonic Remote Trainer.
