Barking

My 6 yr. old Sheltie Kenzie rarely barked before I got him a buddy. I have had my rescue Sadie for 6 months now, and her barking just gets worse & worse. Kenzie has learned the joy of barking with her, and when I let them outside to do their business, they just bark and bark.

This is a new problem for me, I am so embarassed because I bet my neighbors are cursing me.

Sadie barks at squirrels, bicycles, cats, etc., etc. She runs outside barking. Kenzie joins in immediately.

They will respond to "no barks" sometimes- when treats are involved. So they understand what it means.

I've tried making them sit & calm down before I actually let them out. That works briefly. But then the incessant barking starts.

I would really appreciate suggestions! :confused2:

Mine does this too

Sorry I have no advice, just a similar problem.

My sheltie's barking (also named Sadie) has become much worse in recent months. When she's let out to do her business she starts barking, even when there's nothing to bark at. Its as if she's announcing her presence. She looks guilty when told to start barking (she knows she's being bad), but will continue till she's brought in.

We're getting a pup in the early summer so I want to get this problem taken care of.

I've been thinking about muzzling her when she goes out to do her business. Although I hate the idea of it, I thought it might get her out of the habit of announcing herself when she's out side.

If anyone has a better suggestion I'd LOVE to hear it.

same situation here, my older sheltie loves to bark, barks when she wants something an barks just to bark...its quite painful to hear it cause it just rings through my head:eek2:
her barking has increased since i got bandit, course bandit loves to pester nikki an bite on her alot
i guess a muzzle would work when i let those 2 outside.

Here to!

Bacca has never been a barker, but Indy is, and this is starting to rub off on Bacca now. Our neighbour's dog is a barker as well, so the 3 of them go at it it. They can hear him barking outside, even they are both inside and then the fun begins! :rolleyes2:

The only good news (????) is that Indy had been debarked somewhere along the line. So while he can still bark, it's not terribly loud or shrill. Bacca's bark is also deep and not very loud, naturally so. So far, I haven't had nasty notes left by my other neighbours yet! :smile2:

This is funny!
My older sheltie is also a barker. I love him just the same but sometims he makes me crazy. He barks at everything! The vaccumn, the phones, someone comes to the doors, I sneeze, every little thing. In fact, even if I have to sneeze and I am not around him, I hear him barking in my head. I know that sounds silly, but it is true. I guess I am just so use to his barking.

My girl is the oposite. She only parks when she wants to play with her tennis ball or toys and when dad comes home from work, other than that she is so quiet and I love that.

Just goes to show you, each dogs has there own personalities.

Just so you know...

your not alone...I have a barker too. Ross barks at the phone, the doorbell and when I am making dinner...that is his worse time. I now keep him gated in the kitchen with me and he is much better. We got Ross at 10 months and I can't believe how awful his barking is....ugh!

Leanne.

Sadie's barking has become significantly worse since the weather got cold, I'm guessing because she's not getting enough excersise.

Inside she barks at imaginary noises or intruders that just aren't there. Its really not that bad, her demanding whining is more of a nuisance than her barking. Its her outside barking that bothers me, mainly because of the neighbors. If we didn't live in such close proximity with them I wouldn't worry so much, I just don't want her annoying them. When she goes outside she trots around with her head held high and yips away to announce herself. Not so bad during the day but I don't want her to bother anyone when she does it at 6 am or after midnight. We're also getting a second dog in the early summer and I don't want her teaching the pup how to yip at nothing and further annoy the neighbors.

I got a very basic muzzle last night and I'm going to work on putting it on her tonight. I'm going to go about putting it on slowly because I don't want her to think it's negative and dig at it. I'm hoping that if I give her lots of praise and some kibble after she's had it on that she'll look forward to it and not hate it. I'm hoping that after 3-4 weeks of going outside with it on that she'll get out of the habit of yipping at nothing.

The thing I found that worked with Reilly is when I let him outside I would go with him. If he barked I would clap my hands. I would do this once. If he continued to bark, I would go and lay him on his side (in the calm submissive position) and hold him there until he was calm. It only took a couple of times and now if he barks, I only have to stand at the door and clap, he stops straight away. It's worth a try.......this is what worked for me......but I also only have one dog. You would need to do it with two people if you have two dogs as they need to learn together that barking must stop when they hear a clap or what ever signal you want to use.

Indy all of a sudden is barking at my blow dryer! He never did before.

In fact, he starts to bark before I even turn it on! I have a very regimented morning routine. It's the same every day. He listens for my electric toothbrush, waits for it to shut off, then starts his bark about 1 minute later because he knows that after the toothbrushing comes the blow dryer! So smart! :rolleyes2:

I guess I've been lucky--my last 3 shelties were not much at barking and we lived on 5 acres out in the country. My Dish TV shows "It's Me or the Dog" a dog training show and recently she trained a couple of barking dogs. First she taught them to bark on cue, using her fingers and hands in a puppet position (opening and closing) and saying "Bark". Then she taught them "quiet" with both arms straight and crossing the body. Once they were quiet she would give them a treat, then tell them to bark, and again once they were quiet a treat. She kept repeating these until the dogs learned the sign and word for "quiet". I don't know if this will help or not. Good Luck!!
