Bathing sheltie stunts coat growth?

This is the Wham-A-Ham. I was debating between a Whan-A-Ham and a Hurl-A-Heifer this time.

I think it's funny how so many on the Forums really enjoy playing around with the products, especially the CC. I think of it as a necessary evil for getting a dog ring-ready, so I cannot imagine why anyone who didn't have to take the dog into the ring would want to bother. My grooming kit here in NJ consists of a greyhound comb, a slicker, a pin-brush, straight and thinning shears, and a spray-bottle of water... oh, and a bottle of #1 All Systems cleansing shampoo I poured out of my mother's 5-gallon bulk bottle. It's just enough to keep a retired house-dog clean and neat.

I'm glad to read this as I don't buy any of these products. I groom Meggie and Cooper weekly with a water bottle and a brush and comb. I use thinning shears and regular scissors for very light trimming and that's it. Meggie's coat is beautiful, although Cooper's is much more sparce. I think he had a difficult start to life and I'm hoping he fills out one day. Neither of them are stinky doggies at all. I even ask people who come over if they smell and I just don't realize it. They assure me they do not.

I'm glad I'm not alone with just brushes, comb, a rake and a spray bottle of water. And of course cornstarch for behind the ears.

I don't use much more than that either. I do have a coat conditioner I bought at petsmart because it smelled like coconuts.

For Shampoo I swear by Mane and Tail, which I get for approx. $8.00 for a Litre at Walmart. Its very concentrated and lasted me almost 3 years. I use the conditioner also.

My girls only get bathed every 4-6 months or as needed.

Pike had the Chuck a Duck as a pup. or maybe it was a heave a beaver or both.

As for grooming, a pinbrush, spray bottle of water with a touch of crowne royal bodifier, slicker, greyhound comb, thinning shears, scissors and pet rake for blowing coat season is about it for me.

I think bathing every 4-6 weeks is enough , some dogs really get dry skin from to frequent bathing and that can irriate the skin which can effect the hair coat. Some dogs need weekly bathing because of medical conditions but most don't

Pantene human products are actually pretty popular here for dogs so it must be fairly mild, but if you are conditioning frequently I would suggest getting a dog conditioner. You can also use the conditioner in a spray bottle for when you groom.

My dogs get washed a fair bit in warmer months - we do a lot of bushwalking and they do like rolling in dead animals, but it also helps keep their undercoat to a minimum (we do a lot of dog sports in the warmer months and I dont want them to get overheated).

However if they dont need an actual wash I give their coats a rinse and oil wash. I probably do a rinse every 1-2 weeks and a full wash every 3-4 weeks in summer, depending on what they have rolled in. Most of the time its just their outer coats that get dirty anyway. When I do a rinse I put warm water in a bucket, add some oils (I use the plush puppy seabreeze oil) and use a car sponge to sponge their outer coats down, no second rinse. You could probably use conditioner in the bucket instead of oils. When I do a rinse/oil wash I usually just let their coat dry naturally (except in winter) as it dries quickly.

Ok my turn!

1) Bathes every week or two weeks are totally unnecessary, unless the pups really get into a mud roll or find something smelly to roll in, they only get full baths every 3-4 months.

2) If they have muddy or wet feet, I towel them off before they come into the house. Anything left over just dries and flakes off. Easier to vacumm than to bath, and better for pup.

3) I don't use alot of product on them. I discovered the CC coat dressing and I think its marvelous, but I did say on another thread, that any product will crate build-up and require more frequent bathing than I would normally recommend. Its just like with people products. I use these things sparingly, and only if they've got alot of sun as it does add some protection.

4) I only use dog products. Maybe I'm brainwashed, but I do believe its better than people products - I like to assume that they've tested the Ph balances, etc. for doggie skin. But heck, what do I know?
