Beckon Has Fanconi Syndrome

Beckon was officially diagnosed today with Fanconi Syndrome, a proximal renal tube disease. It's quite rare, but Shelties are among the breeds it can affect. I'll leave you to google the details, but the good news is, Fanconi can be managed with supplements and diet. Tomorrow we have a conference call with our vet to outline the treatment plan. We're hoping Beckon can join the majority of dogs who enjoy a 5+ year survival rate. He's 11, so that's more than we could ask. I'll post more in this thread as we learn about this condition.

We're grateful for all prayers and positive energy for our boy.
Sandstorm here! colonel underpants! yu is a colonel, yu is brave! yu is a survivor!

Oh wow, I had heard of it in humans, did not know Shelties were predisposed.

Poor boy can't catch a break. Do you think it's something he's had for a while?
Not long, since he had a full blood workup before his amputation on January 21st. Jerky treats are sometimes the culprit, and we did have some jerky treats from Trader Joe's.

Yes, I read that chicken jerky treats especially are listed as a possible cause, but the article I read mentioned that so far this is speculation and a positive link has not been established. But, even the possibility gives reason to hesitate on what treats we give our little ones.

Yikes - the things I learn on this forum! Chris do you mean actual chicken jerky? Because I often get the chicken "jerky sticks" treat in a package from Trader Joes - they look like a Slim Jim and are a bit soft, not like pieces of dried actual chicken.
