Bedtime...so tired!

Have you read the Monks, Art of Raising a Puppy? We got most of the lead introduction and foundation from that book. It's an excellent book and not only does it help you with all aspects of training it also helps you understand your puppy, talking to them and working with their needs. It helps you understand them and most importantly understand how to make them part of your Pack - and you part of theirs. It a unique look at puppy training, or as I like to call it, puppy understanding and it's approach is practical, accessible and puppy loving (which is the best!!!).

Lexi was born 10/5.

And I actually just borrowed a copy of the Monks book from the vet the other week. With the craziness going on here, I've only read the first few chapters but plan on reading the rest this week. My classes start Thursday so I have a small window to get it finished!
 
Alright, things have been going...well consistently since I first started this post. Lexi gets let out at 4:30 (she barks every morning around the same time) to pee. Then she wants to get up at 5:30. I'm not sure if it's because the cat is awake (our cat likes to get up at 5:30 and cry at our door...fun!) or if she has to go to the bathroom. Normally when we take her out she will poop.

Anyways, what I'm getting at is how and when do you phase out hte 4:30 bathroom break? In a few weeks? When she's older? Just curious---thanks!
 
We have been pretty lucky with Zak getting up at night. The first week he got us up around 2:00 and then would sleep till 6:30. Now he sleeps all night through till 6:30 our normal get up time.
He has his nap times through out the day and evening. He does not really let me know he has to go out other than hitting the front window wooden blinds, not sure why he picked those since he goes out back to do his business.

We have started to phase it out this week. Kai'a is 12 weeks. She does not wake up at night anymore. Most times we end up waking her with our alarm clock. She will, however, be up at 6 or 6:30 for breakfast without fail. I might try pushing the 4:30 up 30 minutes and see if that flys. Maybe you can just connect the early morning bathroom break with your wake up time at 5:30? :smile2:
 
Katniss's idea of pushing the time up 30 minutes is good. You'll have to deal with her crying at first but she should realize the change of routine within a couple of days and adapt. A few weeks after she'd adapted, push it up another 30 minutes, and so on.
 
Thanks for your responses. Do you think that when Lexi wakes up at 4:30 and barks that we should ignore her? Will she quiet down? Haha.

You guys are lucky...we have a house full of early risers!
 
hmm, it sounds we got off very easy. Che is born 09/30 we got him on 11/17 and he slept from midnight till 6 am first night.... he probably would have slept other nights but I would wake him up very 3-4 hrs and take him outside. Since I would go out with him every time we started practicing cue word "potty" and he did great. By 9th week I stopped taking him out and he performed on cue so we had no more accidents in the house and " cuing" came very helpful if we had plans to go out or visiting.
I never tied her leash to me in the house but pup follows me around all the same, even when he sleeps and I walk out of the room he would wake up, follow me and fall asleep in the new place...
does anyone have " lazy bone" pup? Because Che often gets to go potty at 6 am and then get on the pillow next to me and sleep with me till 8 am or sometimes longer...he also does not appreciates early walks...put his butt firmly on the ground near house and refuses to budge...
with leash walking we practicing following early morning is brisk run/ jog to which pup relates well, he loves chasing...
midafternoon walk on short leash heeling, strictly business- we are migrating, with few stops to sniff here and there...
early evening walk on the front clipping harness as there are many dogs and people pup wants to meet and I do not want him to pull on the leash so front harness does not allows to pull and saves his neck from straining...
late evening is retractable leash with little structure
to play and enjoy....
 
We got off easy, too. The first night we got her at 8 weeks old, Buffy got up at 3 a.m. I took her out of her crate and downstairs, and she went potty right away. Since then she has slept through the night. Initially we only asked for 7 hours - 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. One of us would stay up late and the other would get up early.

I do have the deepest sympathy for you guys who are getting up at night. You should let us know when the pups finally sleep through so we can celebrate with you. :biggrin2:
