i need a little help out their i have a 9yr old Sheltie , she has had problems off and on for the last year with belly sores , the vet has put her on antibiotics and steroids and now we are trying promaris flee medicine .

but she is loosing allot of her hair and i notice today it is on her chest and on the inside on her front legs i don't know how to help her the vet doesn't know what it is

do they think it is allergy related? Or something else causing the sores? Or is it something new related to the flea medication?

Misty,

Our sheltie had a similar problem and it was resolved after a thyroid test revealed she was low thyroid. Her hair was falling out, she had belly sores and legs sores and constantly biting at herself. You might want to check out the Illinois Sheltie Rescue website. They talk about shelties and thyroid.

It might be a start.

Best,
Kate

I also agree that it could be an allergy or a thyroid issue.

I would have the vet check your dogs thyroid. There are several threads on that on our forum, use the search button on top, and type in thyroid for the related threads to be highlighted.

If the thyroid comes out OK, I would start with the food. I would feed a grain free food with limited ingredients to see if that makes any changes in the coat condition.

What are you currently feeding your sheltie.

Welcome to the Sheltie Nation! Feel free to go to our "Say Hello" section and introduce your dog and yourself.

Good luck and keep us posted on how your pup does.

Well, at 9yrs old if this is something that started in the last year first things that jumps into my mind is Cushings and Hypothyroid. There are tons of things it could be however and a good diagnostic workup bloodwork and skin is needed. Has your vet done a workup? what kind of tests?

my vet only uses Promeris to treat mites. it's pretty rough as a monthly topical flea med.
I'd go with the other recommendations to get checked out.
