Big Scare yesterday!

I am sorry you are going through the same thing. I hate what this world has become. I have been afraid to go outside with Daisy all day, except to potty around the apartment. I talked to the police, and told them what time I would be walking tomorrow. They promised to have a patrol car in the area.

I will not be afraid to use the pepper spray if I think Daisy is in danger. She is my ward.

I don't want to live in fear, but everytime I think of that guy, my stomach turns.

Im so glad you were able to talk to the police and they are going to help you out in patrolling the area a bit better to be on the watch out for this guy, to make sure you are not in any kind of immediate threat and danger. I`m so sorry so many of our members are finding walks to be such a terrifying experience. I may have inexperienced owners around here that don`t know much about dogs.. but I live in a very good suburb with lots of, for the most part nice (some rude but never threatening or dangerous) individuals/families/seniors. More so, I`ve never had a bad experience no matter how early or dark I travel with Precious so can't really begin to imagine how terrifying this would be to have to want to carry a bat around or pepper spray..... I pray for everyone`s safety, Beth, Jaynie... :(:(
 
What a horrible experience! You would think that walking a dog would be such a normal, everyday, enjoyable activity and not something that you would have to worry about you AND your dog's safety!

I am nice on this forum but I just want to write such mean, very unlady like things about the guy who approached you! GRRRRRRRR!!

I am SO happy that you have some people to walk with! I know it's still pretty hot at that time of day, but just go a little slower and take a little shorter trip and carry water for you both and everything should be fine. It would be so much better to do that than risk having this creep or someone else like him approaching you for who knows what intent.

I am so happy that you and your baby are safe.
 
That's so odd! The other day I was walking both my dogs (6 and 4 months) through the park at around 9pm and a group of shady guys stopped me and said "What kind of dog is that"? I told them and they asked me how much it's worth. I said "Excuse me"? He said "Well, not that I want one buy how much do they cost." I decided to be friendly and tell him the average cost of one around here and his friend behind him says "that's it"? I just continued walking. I was annoyed with myself that I even let them stop me when I knew what I was in for. They were kids...probably 18-20 years old and were the "scum" that muddy up my town. Eh, not as scary as your experience but it was nighttime when this happened and it definitely made me look over my shoulder the rest of the way home. Something about their behavior was just bizarre.
 
First and foremost, I just wanted to say that I'm glad you're safe and hope the cops will be out and about the next time....just in case.

Just remember....everyone...there are people out there that steal dogs specifically for resale. We have had a multitude of cases where people broke into pet shops and stole specific dogs. Or missing dogs basically are missing because they were stolen.

If I had been approached like that and asked about cost, I'd say $500. That way, it's not worth it for them to steal my dog. The Yorkies that have been stolen here, go up to $2k.

Be save everyone. I have taken walking my dog for advantage....since I live in one of the safest cities in the country. But this just reminds me I still need to be proactive about my surroundings.

Beth, I am so sorry you are afraid to enjoy being outside with Daisy. It makes me so mad that I feel unsafe in front of my own house. It's good that you talked to the police, even if it only made them aware that someone is bothering you.

You are right about your dog being your ward. My dog is my child substitute, and I wouldn't think twice about beating those nasty pit bulls to death with my bare hands if I had to. I once kicked a German Shepherd in the jaw while he had my Sheltie Neechee (12 pounds soaking wet) by the scruff of the neck. Neechee was absolutely fearless even after this incident, and it always made me nervous to see him around very large dogs.

But it's not just the dogs I'm worried about this time - it's the scary people with the dogs. Who but the very dregs of society would talk about having their dog attack someone else's dog just for fun?!?!?!?

Our county sheriff's adult daughter lives in the cul-de-sac behind me, and I told her about this yesterday and she told her husband (who is also a sheriff's deputy). I've also warned everyone else who walks dogs on my street, including an ATF agent who walks his drug-sniffing Border Collie, Emma about the same time I walk Bela. I'm trying to get up a dog walkers' club of sorts - there is great safety in numbers!

Back when I got my first Sheltie, I had a great fear and dread of dog nappers. We live in northern Georgia, within shoutin' distance of the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC used to buy dogs from "dealers" for experimentation. Many of these dogs were stolen pets.

A law was passed in the late 1990's (I think) that prevents the CDC (or any other laboratory that uses animals for testing) from buying dogs with identification. In this case, the ID means either a microchip or a tattoo. Just to be safe, all my dogs have had both - since some microchip scanners don't always find different brands of chips. They've also all worn tags.

Please remember each year, when you take your dogs to the vet for their yearly shots, to have them scan to see if the dog's microchip is still working (Neechee's failed after 12 years). Also, if you have a dog tattooed, please keep the area neatly shaved, as hair growth can distort the numbers over time. Mine have always been tattooed on the inner back leg, and I would just clip them when I did their monthly trims.

I totally agree with you- It was one of those situations where after I walked away and my nerves calmed down a bit I thought to myself...why the hell would I answer a question like that? They're basically asking me how much money I have in my wallet. At that point, I wished I had a protection dog with me, or my air horn/pepper spray (yes I own both haha). These were just kids and from how dumb and foolish they acted I couldn't imagine them pulling off a theft but you can't put anything past anyone these days. I'm considering it a lesson learned and the next time something like this happens, I'm not going to be as outgoing as I was before if I smell a rat.

Yesterday I was walking Daisy to the supermarket to get our bottle water jugs filled up, and on the way back out of no where comes this scruffy, gang- looking guy (a few bandanas, on his head and pocket) and asked if this was the sheltie I was having put down...I said no, did he live in my apartments. He said no, but got real vague. He asked me if I wanted her. I retorted I just got her. Then he asked me if he could help me home (I had two water gallon jugs and Daisy on a leash), and I said no...but I got really scared. We resumed our walk, with me looking over my shoulder the whole way.

That is really scary. I hope you don't think I am trying to tell you you did something wrong-Please forgive me if I sound that way. After reading your post I was thinking that if you were still close enough to the supermarket when this guy confronted you, maybe you could have walked back to it instead of continued home? All I could think of is you and this guy with no other people around at that time to help you. I have to say also that I have been alone in the woods with my dog, and without my cell phone. I take it for granted that I live in a very safe town. I shouldn't though, I should always have my phone.
