Blowing coat question

Just remember those pics you saw of his parents he will look VERY different, one yours will be altered which does change the coat slightly...and two 99% of the "show" pictures the dogs are stacked with soo much product they can go though a hurricane and their fur wont move an millimeter!
i guess thats true, on both points. so how does being altered change their coats? does it thin out or get fuller, longer? what? he is 7 months right now, should we get him altered soon, or is it better to wait till after they turn a year? do i need to wait for his adult coat to come in?

I'm just learning that adult-spayed girls blow coat for about two months!!!

Bela's last litter (poor puppy mill mama) was in December or January, so she was out-of-coat when rescue got her. Then some clever person decided to shave her down so she looks like a half-grown puppy. She was spayed in March, and by the time I got her in June, she was blowing coat BIG TIME. Took a couple of weeks of daily brushing and a couple of warm baths to see what she truly looked like. Turned out, she was a delightfully dainty little girl under all that thatch and fluff!

But no sooner than she quit blowing coat from the spaying (also, any time a dog undergoes anesthetic this will happen, too - same with people, as I had 3 surgeries in three months last year and lost most of my hair), we had a few cooler days and she started up again. Of course, it went right back up into the mid-90's a couple days later, but she continues to shed that really fine summer undercoat.

She has started to noticeably grow out from her ill-advised haircut, but in bits and pieces. She looks pretty wild when she's been rolling on the floor! Long hair, short hair, and some in between all sticking up every which way.

I wouldn't expect a 7 month old to shed this fall. Probably not until next spring. My 9 month old is still coming into coat. Izzy has just started to blow coat, and she is 15 months old.
The harshness of the coat texture changes when the dog is altered. It gets more length, and a lot less undercoat.
Also, putting a dog under general anestheia for a procedure, can cause them to blow coat prematurely. We take that into consideration for show schedules with elective procedures, ie. OFA xrays, dental cleanings.

I would agree. My boys didn't really actually start blowing until this year and they are both 3 years old. There was a little last year, but not unmanageable.
