Bordatella vaccination

Just got back from the Vet and Megan did just fine ..The Vet tech recommended looking into the flu vaccination as well, what do you all think about that one??

Mine have never had a problem with that one, except it used to make Katie sneeze right afterward. My vet suggested the flu vac for Zak since was going to be around other dogs in the obedience class.
I looked it up on line and asked about it here and I feel it is so new I did not want to risk it. I even think Dr Shelli advised against it.

I think you're right about Dr. Shelli's advisement! I tend to be a minimalist like most of us here on the forum and really don't want to vaccinate more than I need too..Especially with the flu vaccine being so new and all

I didn't get the flu vaccine for Bailey. She is in obedience class and I take her to the park all the time and no issues. Also, flu season is pretty much over.

It is the same kind of vaccine as the human flu shot, so look for signs of kennel cough. It's not unheard of for people/dogs to get sick from a modified live vaccine. Just ask my boss's daughter who "mysteriously" got the flu with a 103 degree fever 24 hours after her flu shot. Hmm...

HA HA that was me the one and only time I got the Flu vaccine. No thanks, I take my changes with getting the flu than do that again.

Intranasal Bord, usually few side effects except sneezing or sniffling worse case mild kennel cough. Immunity takes 24-48 hrs to occur and last 6-9 months based on challenage studies so boosters need to be done every 6 months. It(IGa antibodies) can also be maintained by challenages with natural exposure.

Injections take a 2 booster series the first time to be affective. It is boostered every 1 yr. Since the antibody type is IGg and not local IGa like the intranasal the response time to infection is slower with the injection based antibodies and somethimes infections can take hold before immune response is noted. Also since it similates a different kind of immune response, we see more vaccines reactions ie hives, puffy face, vomiting with injections. That is the therory for choosing Intranasal over Injectable by most vets. We reserve the injection for those dogs we can't give intranasal to.
