I will keep it for whatever may happen. I never crated jake. I guess the one of the benefits of working at home is im here with them. I very rarely travel, if i do, my dad takes care of the animals. I have a macaw too. Thats awesome that dogs feel comfy and sleep in their crate. I like when they sleep in my bed with me. im single and have nightmares alot and its comforting knowing that i have a dog in my bed protecting me. though jake sleeps on the floor in my room.

My dogs sleep in the bed with me too. After they are trained and grown up. What age that happens at is up for discusion. Justice it was 9 months, Ember almost 2yrs and Diva 14 months. I tried to let Diva out at 10 months I think and she got into the Laundry and chewed up a pair of jeans , 3 shirts and all the underwear in the hamper. Foreign body surgery is expensive so back in the crate she went.

I agree 100%. We were posting at the same time but I said about the same thing. I too would not watch a dog who was not crate trained.

my dad had no issues coming over and taking care of jake the one time i traveled somewhere neither do any of my friends. I guess its to each their own on this one. my mom never crated her sheltie when i was growing up.


anyway, what is it with the underwear?? Puppies mostly i have noticed will do that.

Smudge's crate has a cover. Fluffy's crate does not have a cover, but it needs one. Fluffy doesn't care that it doesn't have a cover. She loves her crate, and will go to sleep with no drama.

Smudge doesn't like his crate, but will go in on command if he knows that he is going to get a treat afterwards. He goes to sleep with no drama.


HOWEVER.

Any time after 5 am is fair game! If I sneeze, roll over, groan, moan, ect. he starts barking and carrying on to be let out. Fluffy doesn't care. I think if Fluffy had been my first dog I would have been ruined for life. She is just awesome about everything.

Meggie gets one little treat before she goes in hers. Now she is always poking me with her nose trying to get me to go to work in the morning so she can go in. She is always watching with her internal clock for bedtime too, same time every night she is poking me to go to bed. I leave the door open and she will go in if she hears thunder too.

Yogi was crate trained as a puppy, he sleeps in it (covered at night to keep out draughts) and is fine in the crate. Revel was crated on occasion as a puppy but not crate trained. Consequently he is a real nuisance when left in the crate while I am around and whines constantly to be let out for example at a show. He is OK when I'm not near by! My dogs are both fed in their crates, it stops food being gulped down because they know they can eat in peace and are not pestered. They are also crated if I am out for any length of time. They have water and their kongs and settle fine. I am not worried that they are at the window barking at people passing by, or fighting over something, or getting hurt through some freak accident and if someone breaks in to steal the TV they will not escape and get lost or get kicked to death - this acatually happened not long ago. When we go camping the dogs are safe (and cozy) in their covered crates - even Revel prefers this to sleeping in the open tent. In the car they travel in a crate. They cannot jump out if the tail gate opens and in an accident they will hopefully be kept safe and sound. When I get a new pup in the not too distant future I will certainly ensure he is crate trained for these reasons. I know there are people whose dogs live in crates, this is abuse and not what they were designed for but providing the crate is not used as a prison for confinement for long periods of time, or a as place of punishment, it is a tool in the same way as a collar and lead.

Sandstorm used to be crated at bedtime, right when we got him. It was so easy, never any issues. When I started crating him during the day when I went to work we didn't want to crate him at bedtime too, so he is in our room with us with the door closed. So cute in the a.m. when he wakes us up!!! The sheltie face in our faces is priceless!! He is very good at night, and does not chew anything- because we are there. I started crating him when we went to work because at first he was gated in the hallway and chewed the baseboards. If anything happened we would have been devestated. He goes in the crate willingly in the morning, and watches t.v. and the bird. he is up on all the latest news.

ya thats what i do too, i have closed the doors to the upstairs rooms. jake though i noticed will go in the basement sometimes. im thinking he must do it when im sleeping. i need to remember to pick the food up at night before i go to sleep. belle sleeps in my bed with me. i give her anther month and i bet she has it down pat. we had one accident yesterday. and i actually picked up her poop and put it outside on a papertowel, and showed it to her, and that has seemed to help too. jake just whines by the door or walks over there and looks at me. but he goes out with belle now too so no need to even tell me cuz im always putting belle outside!! izabella is turning out to be a darling and they wanted to put her down i still cant get over that!

A crazy lady told me Cooper should have been put down when he was born because of his malformed eye and compromised hearing. To think this sweet, SMART, boy is considered "defective" to anyone just breaks my heart. Meggie and I would have missed so much had this woman been around when Cooper was born. He does take a little longer to train, but once he gets it, he gets it. I think it's more poor communication on my part than poor understanding on his.
