I think Dr Shelli will agree with me on this. Teaching a dog to settle in a crate is VERY important. If ever your dog needs to be hospitalized, or kept quiet for medical reasons, your pup will be more comfortable and possibly heal more quickly if it is able to relax and rest in a crate. Dogs that are not used to crates, have a very stressful time when put in a situation that requires crating. Maybe a situation would come up where you needed to have a friend, or family member keep your pup overnight. I wouldn't watch a dog that wasn't crate trained.
I think it is a responsibility of pup owners to crate train their pups, just like you train them to be a good doggie citizens.
