I think Dr Shelli will agree with me on this. Teaching a dog to settle in a crate is VERY important. If ever your dog needs to be hospitalized, or kept quiet for medical reasons, your pup will be more comfortable and possibly heal more quickly if it is able to relax and rest in a crate. Dogs that are not used to crates, have a very stressful time when put in a situation that requires crating. Maybe a situation would come up where you needed to have a friend, or family member keep your pup overnight. I wouldn't watch a dog that wasn't crate trained.
I think it is a responsibility of pup owners to crate train their pups, just like you train them to be a good doggie citizens.

My dogs too. I am really grateful for my crate training right now with Ember injuried I have had to kennel her at night to keep her fron jumping up and down off the bed and during the day to keep her quiet. She doesn't mind in the least. If she wasn't used to it,she would be misable. Even before the injury there were nights that she would go and sleep in the kennel all by herself.

I can always tell at the clinic the dogs that are not crate trained they can't relax in the kennel. Makes a stressful time more stressful.

I use crates are not only used in housetraining but chew training, traveling, at shows ,at training class(I can't hold 3 dogs) and so many more uses I couldn't imagine them not being crate trained.

BTW I don't consider a puppy thousetrained until there have been no accidents for a minimum 6 months. I have seen so many of my clients who have thought the pups were trained after a month and then the pup starts going in the house and they can't figure out why and gets mad she/he knows better. No they don't, they are not thoughly trained. Time and time again at around 4-5 months. Once they get to a habit of going iin the house it is really hard to break.

I agree 100%. We were posting at the same time but I said about the same thing. I too would not watch a dog who was not crate trained.
 
Cranberry would have eaten everyone else's food if not in the crate. he eats fast :wink2: he had to stay in the crate until everyone was done- sometimes that included me eating my dinner :winkgrin:
so yes, always have crates and get the dogs used to them. probably have about 4 crates in the living room right now. two will be cleaned when I get home and maybe get put up. who knows- Cranpup might get upgraded to a bigger size- we'll have to see.
 
Megan still doesn't love her crate :cool:. However that's partially my fault for not keeping her in it when I was supposed to and letting her sleep in daughters room instead! In fact, we're trying to get used to it again by having her sleep in it at night.

She lasts a few hours in it but than starts "chirping" to be let out..Do some dogs prefer certain types of crates or being covered at night?

Hey Susan..Trapp used to chirp to...I like that term!:biggrin2::wink2:


Trapp was one to sleep so soundly,and wake up and want to play..at 3& 4 am..this mom is not playing.Finally after a few months down in,I finally decided one night I was going to ignore the chirp.I knew he just wanted out,and he had me wrapped around his little paw.

After ignoring him only one night,by golly he learned I was not getting up to play outside.

I thank Janet for taking the time to acclimate both of the pups to being in thier own space,x-pens also.As niether of these pups were whiners at night.They would settle right in.
Jasper has never whined once since being home,and in his crate at night. He probably would love to nest in with Earnhardt & Trapp at night,but I'm not ready to let him yet.Just as well...he likes his den.

Answer to your question about covering the crate,I partially cover Jaspers,and only because his crate is right by an AC vent.I don't want my baby getting chilly!!:biggrin2:

I find that Lexi relaxes faster if we cover her crate. She is so busy that she always wants to see and be involved in what everyone is doing. She will eventually lay down, but even when she's sleepy if we're up, she's keeping one eye on us. I feel better when I cover her crate because she relaxes immediately--her flock is safe and she can sleep!
 
I cover Cran's crate. I use the blanket that I sent to Sheltieluver when he was a pup. I think the familiar smells helped him when he was a lil guy and it's still over his bedroom crate :wink2:
 
I will keep it for whatever may happen. I never crated jake. I guess the one of the benefits of working at home is im here with them. I very rarely travel, if i do, my dad takes care of the animals. I have a macaw too. Thats awesome that dogs feel comfy and sleep in their crate. I like when they sleep in my bed with me. im single and have nightmares alot and its comforting knowing that i have a dog in my bed protecting me. though jake sleeps on the floor in my room.
