Canned Salmon..

Too each their own!

I've always found Sheltie's tummies to be very sensitive so I try to keep them to a fairly bland diet. I also don't like to encourage them to think that people food is for them. I'll never forget the year my forever pup got into Christmas Turkey and it was expelling from both ends for days.

I can appreciate the theory that if you get their tummies used to richer food, they will react less, when they do get in contact with it.

However, I prefer my dogs to not live for food. So with rare exceptions they get their meals twice per day with minimal fuss. The only exception is at the cottage when we are having a picnic lunch....we'll share the carrotts.

I have a different approach from Barb. I feed varieties and don't stick to one thing. By doing this, my dogs have a variety of bacterias available in their gut, and therefore do not get upset tummies. I truly believe that by getting your dog used to digesting various foods, your dogs are healthier, and do not get sick by the slightest changes in their diets.

Post #17, Dr. Shelli give a good description on how this works.

thanks for posting the link to that thread.. that was very interesting. I don't know what Belle ate before we got her, seems like she was fed whatever food the breeder had on hand at the time.. she does good on chicken and pumpkin but lamb affected her, as did a bison bone, but maybe her stomach needed time to adapt to richer meats. but for now, I think I am going to stick to the chicken and pumpkin..

April loves a sardine snack every now and then. I get some in a mustard sauce, and she figures she should get the whole tin.

I can't imagine what sardines and mustard would do to my pups innards - never mind my own! I'm sticking to plain jane food for me and my pups!
