Casey is in early stage renal failure

And he just looks a little frail. I don't know how to tell you what I see but I can see a change. Is it because I know? Or do I really? I think I really do.

you know Casey better then anyone.
keeping you in my prayers

My Sheltie is also in early stages of renal disease. We caught it early with a blood test and at this time he has no symptoms, so his illness may be less advanced than Casey's. We decided to pursue an alternative protocol with a high-quality, moderate protein, lots-of-water (no kibble) diet and so far he is doing well. Blood work 2 months after the change in diet showed marginal improvement. We'll repeat in August to see where he is. My guy is also 13. You may want to check out Barbara Royal's book, "The Royal Treatment" and others for alternative points of view, although if your guy is doing well you might not want to mess with success. Best of luck with Casey. We love them to pieces.

Thanks Take4Roll10, for the info. I'm sent in a request to join the group.

Terry, sorry to hear about your baby.

Today Casey is just Casey. lol He's running in and out like there's a revolving door on the house. He does that most of the morning if I let him. lol He's been sleeping in the morning for the last few. We'll see if he continues with the revolving door or if he lays down and naps now.

He goes back the end of the month for another blood test to see how he's doing.

I tired the link Take4roll sent you to on yahoo and it didn't work. The group I learned the most from on yahoo is called K9kidneys just in case it wasn't that one.

Did your vet suggest any fluids, meds or protein binders? My Gypsy was diagnosed at a young age and lived 2 more years with proper care. She passed a few weeks after her 5th Birthday.

Sending prayers to you and your pup.

He's on prescription food but that's it so far. I suspect more may happen in a month when we go back for another blood test.

And I signed up for that forum. They wanted to know everything but what size underwear I wear. I sent it all in.

Then they approved me. Lord love a duck. Within the course of 3 minutes they sent me 17 emails. I counted them. Those people need someone to do some consolidation.

I sent them an email and requested that they remove me from their forum and their list. It just ticked me off.

I already get over 300 emails every day. I sure didn't need them adding to it. And that was after I had gone in and requested ONE email per day.

Sorry.....just really hit me wrong today.

Yes, they do send a lot of emails. You can change your account setting for the group, so that you only receive one email every day with a link to each discussion instead of getting individual emails.

My cat had kidney failure at 17, and I remember the trying to figure out what to do to help. I decided to go with just palliative care and nothing more than just making her as comfortable as possible. I just want to encourage you to not be put off with the thought of Sub-Q fluids if that is recommended by your vet. It is pretty easy and not expensive if you can get supplies through a costco or sams club pharmacy. Dogs tolerate it really well, too.

Take4, I set my account to receive ONE email a day AS I SIGNED UP! Obviously that was immediately ignored.

I asked Doc about the sub Q fluids. He said because Casey is old (13) his tissues wouldn't absorb the sub Q like they should and he wanted to always do it via IV.

Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear about Casey. I have been through renal disease with 3 elderly cats and I am currently managing Piper's (my 2 year old Sheltie) renal disease. Piper was born with a congenital kidney defect and was diagnosed just after her 1st birthday.

Fist off - I am not a vet. Here is Piper's medical regime:

100 ml sub-Q fluid every day

Azodyl (kidney supplement) 2 in the morning and 1 in the evening

1/4 teaspoon of Pet Tinic (replaces vitamins washed out with Sub-Q - particularly B vitamins). Twice a day mixed in with her food

Cranindin (urinary tract supplement - apparently something in the cranberries makes it difficult of bacteria to stick to the urinary tract). 1 table a day - Piper thinks these are the BEST cookies ever!

Food: Canned Royal Canine LP - she loves it thank goodness

Most importantly - dogs with kidney disease have upset stomachs. When I treated my cats vets were recommending famitodine. It turns out that animals don't absorb this the way humans do and it was found (U Penn) to be not as effective as was hoped. However, Omaprazole is absorbed by cats and dogs in a manner similar to humans and has been very effective at calming stomach issues so that their appetite does not wane. Piper takes 10 mg as soon as we get up. Wait 1 hour then feed breakfast. (you have to order from a pharmacist b/c they only sell 20 mg OTC).

We take 1 day at a time and monitor her blood work every 3 months. Piper is currently stable and a very happy little girl.

Again, not a vet but perhaps some of Piper's medications might be helpful for Casey.

Wishing you and Casey all the best!

Kimberly & Piper

Kimberly, thank you for all that information! I'm expecting something to happen (meds, etc)k after we get his next blood test done the end of the month. At this point we're doing Royal Canin MP. We haven't gone to the LP yet. Doc said he wanted to hold that in reserve for later on.
