Charlie - Spinal Stroke

So sorry to hear that you and your family are going through this with Charlie, especially at this time of year. Its such a scary, traumatic thing to happen without adding holiday stress to the situation.

My Sadie had a spinal stroke almost a year and a half ago, it was just before her 3rd birthday.

We chose not to undergo the expensive testing. We were told that the testing wouldn't prove that it was a spinal stroke, just that it would rule out other problems. We did allow our vet to perform an xray and I think she also did some blood work.

Since Sadie wasn't in any pain so we chose to take her home and treat her with prednisone and physical therapy. Luckily I was on vacation when this happened so I was able to focus my attention on her for a week.

Sadie made remarkable progress on the prednisone and we were also able to take her swimming daily, which also made a HUGE difference.

I can't remember who said it, but there is a sort of 3 day, 3 week, 3 month rule with regard to spinal strokes. You'll see the most significant progress after 3 days. You'll see progress, but less after 3 weeks, then you'll stop seeing progress after 3 months.

I looked at this as a 3 month window to get as much physical therapy done as possible. I went to a vet who specializes in pet therapy. She was able to give me a number of exercises to do with Sadie at home. The swimming made the biggest difference though, if you have access to a pool swimming therapy is the best for rehabilitation.

I was really lucky that Sadie made the progress that she did, she regained approx. 95% of the use of her back legs. That being said, the use of prednisone and physical therapy can usually help in a big way so don't lose hope that Charlie can improve a great deal too.

Check out the thread on Sadie that Danisgoat mentioned, there's a lot of information there and some videos of Sadie that might give you hope. I'll also send you a private message (PM) with my email address and phone number, if you'd like to talk.

Hang in there! Hugs to Charlie!

Yes it was Chandler who had a Spinal Stroke in April of 2010 i was able to get him to the vet quickly since they are only 2 blocks away and later a neurologist. I decided against the MRI. Most of the use of his legs was regained except for his toes turned under on the one side. I used a boot to keep them from getting scraped. Depending on your pups issues there is a great site. handicappedpets.com You may find some helpful devices there. You can search my threads but Ontariosheltie will be very helpful to you. I have had a tough month losing 2 Sisters and am not ready to rehash Chandler's last year at this time. Sorry not trying to be rude. It is just too much. God Bless.

I don't think you are rude Dawn. You have had a tough few weeks, and it is understandable that you do not want to go through any of this again. I do know that you responded to OntarioSheltie and you are correct when you direct Charlie's people to this thread. She had a very good thorough walkthrough of all she went through.

Take care and hugs.

Nor do I. You've had a tough year, never mind the last few months. The information that you did provide will be very helpful. :smile2:

Thanks Emmasmom and Ontario Sheltie, plus I was thinking I didn't join until a few months after so you are getting the facts a few months later where with Ontario Sheltie you are getting a more thorough day by day thread because she was a member at the time.

When she posted her experience much of my info is probably in that thread letting her know we experienced the same thing.

As I said best of luck and sending prayers.

Toby hurt himself

Sorry, not to change subjects abruptly here and interrupt the thread but I need a little advice!

Our 3 month old Toby is a typical normal rambunctious little boy puppy, which means he is also fearless. This morning while playing and running around, he did a pretty hard slip and fall and appears to have hurt his left rear leg . I didn't know this happened till he started limping I panicked and asked my DH John about it and he told me Toby fell and is probably having a delayed on set of limping.

Okay.....here is my question?? Is it better to let Toby be the guide on what he can and can't do for a few days or do I need to keep him exercising to "work it out"? Should I call the Vet and see if she thinks he needs pain meds? He doesn't cry or anything, doesn't react when I pull on it so I am guessing soft tissue :confused2:

You probably should have started your own thread, your post would get more notice.

I would try to keep him quieter than usual and keep an eye on it. Its likely a bit of a strain and will go away. If the limping doesn't stop in a few days take him to the vet.
